consist of pump(s), piping, filter(s), water conditioning <strong>and</strong> disinfection equipment, <strong>and</strong> otheraccessory equipment that will clarify, condition, <strong>and</strong> disinfect the water in accordance withthis article. All pool equipment shall meet the st<strong>and</strong>ards set <strong>for</strong>th in the most recent editionof ANS I/NSF-50, “Circulation System Components a nd Related Materials f or <strong>Swimming</strong><strong>Pools</strong>, Spas/Hot Tubs” or other, independent testing <strong>and</strong> certifying organization, <strong>and</strong> shall beapproved by the department. The equipment shall be operated continuously on a twenty-four(24) hour basis to obtain the minimum required number of four (4) turnovers per day, or oneturnover every six (6) hours. All pool piping systems shall be designed to accommodate onehundred percent (100%) of the design flow rate. During normal pool operation, a maximumof t wenty pe rcent (20%) of t he circulation f low s hall be t hrough t he m ain dr ain <strong>and</strong> aminimum of eighty percent (80%) shall be through the overflow gutters or skimmers. Allcirculation system c omponents, i ncluding f ilter(s), pum p(s), ha ir l int s trainer(s) <strong>and</strong> ot hersimilar c omponents, s hall f unction pr operly <strong>and</strong> be m aintained i n a c lean c ondition. F orcirculation systems ut ilizing ove r-the-gutter c irculation, a n a pproved s urge de vice s hall b eprovided. T imers us ed i n c onjunction w ith any circulation e quipment a re pr ohibitedwhenever the pool is open <strong>for</strong> use, but may be used when the pool is not open during the offseason.(1) Pumps. Pump(s) shall be adequate in number <strong>and</strong> capacity to provide the requiredpool turnover rate. Pumps shall supply the design circulation <strong>and</strong> backwash flows ata d ynamic he ad s ufficient t o ove rcome f riction l osses i n t he pi ping, a ppurtenances<strong>and</strong> m aximum f ilter he ad l oss. If m ore t han one pum p i s ut ilized i n de sign orconstruction, t hen a ll o f t he pum ps s hall be t he s ame i ncluding m anufacturer, s ize,capacity, <strong>and</strong> other similar factors. Pump per<strong>for</strong>mance curves shall be submitted withthe plans. An adequately sized strainer shall be provided on t he suction side of thecirculation pum p. S econdary pum ps, i f us ed, on va cuum filter s ystems s hall beprotected b y a s trainer s ized t o a dequately pr otect t he pum p. S trainers s hall beinspected as often as necessary <strong>and</strong> maintained in a clean condition.(2) Filters. F ilter(s) s hall be s ized <strong>and</strong> maintained to accommodate t he r equireddesign circulation flow. If more than one filter is utilized in design or construction,then all of t he filters s hall be t he s ame i ncluding m anufacturer, size, capacity, <strong>and</strong>other similar factors.(3) Inlets. A minimum of two (2) adjustable inlets installed flush with the pool wallor floor shall be located in conjunction with the proposed method of circulation so asto provide effective, uni<strong>for</strong>m circulation of the incoming water throughout the pool<strong>and</strong> to prevent stagnant areas. The total number of inlets shall be calculated based onone (1) inlet <strong>for</strong> fifteen (15) linear feet of pool perimeter, or major fraction thereof.Inlets s hall be e venly s paced e ither a long t he pool pe rimeter or on t he pool f loor.Inlets shall be installed below the normal water level. F loor inlets shall be providedon a ll pool s w ith s urface a reas e xceeding t wo t hous<strong>and</strong> s quare f eet ( 2000 s . f .).Additional inlets m ay b e us ed or m ay be r equired in a ddition to the minimumrequired number of floor inlets <strong>for</strong> steps, seats, <strong>and</strong> sun/tanning shelves to facilitatecirculation.
