The piping system shall consist of non-toxic materials <strong>and</strong> be able to withst<strong>and</strong> aminimum pressure of fifty pounds per square inch (50 p.s.i.). Piping configuration shall bedesigned to minimize friction losses. All piping used <strong>for</strong> pool circulation <strong>and</strong> manufacturersmust meet the st<strong>and</strong>ards set <strong>for</strong>th in the current edition of ANSI/NSF 50, “Circulation SystemComponents a nd R elated M aterials f or S wimming P ools, S pas/Hot T ubs”, or a lternatecriteria approved by the department. All pool piping shall bear the N.S.F. seal <strong>for</strong> potablewater <strong>and</strong> be schedule 40 or greater. Pipe installation shall comply with the applicable localplumbing code <strong>and</strong> this article. All valves <strong>and</strong> piping in the equipment room shall be clearlylabeled, a nd w ater f low di rection s hall be i ndicated on e xposed pi ping in t he f ilter r oom.Piping shall be installed to facilitate complete drainage of the system. Heat bending of anypool piping <strong>for</strong> installation is prohibited.(1) Maximum velocity. V elocity s hall not e xceed t en f eet pe r s econd ( 10 f .p.s.) i npressure piping or six feet per second (6 f.p.s.) in suction piping.(2) Main drain line. T he m ain dr ain l ine s hall be de signed a nd c onstructed t oaccommodate 100% of the design flow rate, <strong>and</strong> head loss calculations shall includefriction losses of the pipe, fittings <strong>and</strong> the hair <strong>and</strong> lint strainer. The size of the maindrain pipe shall be continuous throughout the length of the line.(3) S kimming system lines. T he s kimming s ystem l ines s hall be de signed <strong>and</strong>constructed to accommodate 100% of the design flow rate. The flow-through rate ofthe skimming system, based on the manufacturer’s minimum recommendations, shallbe used to determine the turnover rate if the turnover rate exceeds the manufacturer’srecommendations.(4) Waste lines. Pool wastewater shall be di rected to an approved sewage disposalsystem. The backwash waste line shall be no smaller than the size of the pipe exitingthe f ilter f or the entire l ength o f t he b ackwash l ine. There s hall b e no directconnection be tween a ny pool pi ping a nd t he a pproved di sposal s ystem. Dischargepoints shall be shown on the plans.(5) Piping details. P lans must include complete details of all pool piping. All poolpiping shall be supported in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.(6) Unknown Total Dynamic Head. Existing p ools ut ilizing s <strong>and</strong> filters w ith anunknown total d ynamic head shall be considered to have a minimum of sixty (60’)feet of h ead. E xisting pools ut ilizing di atomaceous e arth filters w ith a n unknow ntotal dynamic head shall be considered to have a minimum of fifty (50’) feet of headon vacuum systems <strong>and</strong> ninety (90’) feet of head on pressure systems. Existing poolsutilizing cartridge filters with an unknown total of dynamic head shall be considered<strong>Cobb</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Douglas</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public Health<strong>Douglas</strong> <strong>Rules</strong> <strong>and</strong> Regs <strong>for</strong> <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Pools</strong>22
