(4) Main drain openings. Each pool s hall be pr ovided w ith t wo (2) or m orehydraulically b alanced main drain openings f or each main drain line at t he de epestportion <strong>and</strong> constructed to completely drain the pool. M ain drain openings must becovered by an approved, secured, <strong>and</strong> listed suction outlet cover/grate, that is installedaccording to all manufacturer specifications. The open area of each drain cover shallbe at least four (4) times the cross-sectional area of the drain pipe, <strong>and</strong> sufficient flowarea shall be provided so that the full flow velocity at any part of the cover/grate willnot exceed one <strong>and</strong> one half feet per second (1½ fps). Openings between cover/gratebars shall not exceed one half inch (1/2”). Main drain openings shall be constructedin parallel, in a tee configuration, <strong>and</strong> spaced evenly across the deep portion of thepool, w ith a m inimum s pacing of five f eet ( 5’) between each m ain dr ain ope ningmeasured f rom c enter to c enter of s uction pi pes. If t he l isted s uction out letcover/grate manufacturer specifies a greater cover/grate separation than five feet (5’),then t hat di stance s hall be t he m inimum a llowed s eparation. Alternatively, maindrain ope nings m ay b e located on t wo ( 2) di fferent pl anes. If t hree or more m aindrain openings a re in stalled, their ins tallation shall be in accordance withANSI/APSP-7 2006 or any successor st<strong>and</strong>ard. Main drain opening sumps shall meetthe mini mum de sign criteria de signated by the manufacturer of the s uction outletcover/grate.(5) Skimmers <strong>and</strong> overflow gutters. A s urface s kimming or g utter s ystem s hall beprovided <strong>for</strong> each pool <strong>and</strong> shall be designed <strong>and</strong> constructed to skim the pool surfacewhen the w ater le vel is ma intained within the ope rating w ater le vel r ange of t hesystem’s weir device or rim.(6) Vacuum cleaning system. A vacuum system shall be provided <strong>for</strong> pool cleaning.Wall mounted vacuum cleaning fitting(s) shall be located in an accessible position(s)at least six inches (6”) <strong>and</strong> no greater than eighteen inches (18”) below the minimumoperating w ater l evel o r as an attachment t o t he s kimmer(s). A va cuum f ittingcover(s) that is self closing, self latching, <strong>and</strong> compliant with IAPMO SPS 4 shall beprovided <strong>for</strong> w all m ounted t ype va cuum s ystems. If a pproved f or us e, por tablevacuum systems shall not be stored on the pool deck.(7) Flow meters. A n ade quately s ized flow m eter, cap able of m easuring <strong>and</strong>indicating a minimum range of one half (½) to one <strong>and</strong> one half (1½) times the designflow rate shall be installed on the pool return line to accurately indicate the circulationrate in gallons per minute. Flow meters shall be conspicuously located <strong>and</strong> installedin accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions <strong>for</strong> placement.(8) Heaters. P ools equipped with heaters s hall ha ve a fixed thermometer in thecirculation line. W ater temperature s hall b e the rmostatically controlled. A dequateexternal va lves a nd pi ping s hall be pr ovided t o e nable b ypassing t he he ater a nd t ofacilitate complete removal <strong>for</strong> repairs without interruption of pool circulation. At alltimes the temperature in the pool water shall not exceed one hundred <strong>and</strong> four degreesFahrenheit ( 104º F ). H eaters s hall be i nstalled a ccording t o t he m anufacturer’sinstructions <strong>and</strong> in accordance with all applicable state, county <strong>and</strong> local codes. A nunbreakable thermometer designed <strong>for</strong> use in a pool must be available <strong>for</strong> bathers <strong>and</strong><strong>Cobb</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Douglas</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public Health<strong>Douglas</strong> <strong>Rules</strong> <strong>and</strong> Regs <strong>for</strong> <strong>Swimming</strong> <strong>Pools</strong>21
