• Semester credits transfer into the <strong>University</strong> on a one-for-one basis. Each quarterhour credit is awarded 2/3 of a semester hour of credit. Credits taken in anyschool or college of the <strong>University</strong> are recognized in all other schools and collegesof the <strong>University</strong>• To fulfill any science general education requirement, transferred courses mustinclude a laboratory component. Preparatory laboratory classes, such asSCIE100 or its equivalent, do not meet the lab science requirement.Advanced Placement, CLEP, and International Baccalaureate CreditStudents who take Advanced Placement (AP courses at the high school level andcomplete the examinations administered by the Educational Testing Service are awardedcredit based on the scores and course equivalent(s), as determined by the appropriate<strong>Mercer</strong> academic department for each exam. No credit may be awarded for scores of 1or 2. Applicants should request that an official score report from The College Board besent to the Office of the Registrar.Credit is also awarded for examinations administered by the College LevelExamination Program (CLEP). Credit is awarded for scores of 50 or higher on the generaland/or subject exams. CLEP credit will not be awarded if a student has already takenthe equivalent college-level course.The International Baccalaureate Program is an internationally recognized curriculumthat is taught at numerous high schools in the United States, Canada, and other countries.<strong>Mercer</strong> awards credit for scores of 5, 6, or 7 on the higher-level examinations of theInternational Baccalaureate Program. Score reports should be included with the student’sfinal high school transcripts or provided by the International Baccalaureate Office.CLEP credit for courses in the major areas must be approved by the faculty of theacademic discipline concerned. An official transcript from the College EntranceExamination Board must be provided in order for the CLEP credit to be accepted as transfercredit. Students presenting Advanced Placement, CLEP, or InternationalBaccalaureate scores may not receive more than 30 hours total credit from any or allthree sources. Under highly unusual circumstances, an appeal to the dean may be madefor credit greater than 30 hours. CLEP credit will not be awarded if a student has alreadytaken the equivalent college-level course.Credit by ExaminationDepartment Challenge Examinations: Credits may be awarded upon the successfulcompletion of examinations developed and administered by the departments of theCollege of Continuing and Professional Studies with the approval of the assistant dean ordean.1. To be eligible to apply for a departmental challenge examination, a student mustbe actively enrolled in the semester in which the examination is to be taken or thelearning experiences are evaluated. The student must submit an application tothe appropriate program coordinator who will forward the request for approval tothe department chair. The chair will forward the request to the dean’s office forapproval.2. Appropriate fee payment must be made to the Bursar’s Office prior to sitting forthe exam. A non-refundable administrative fee of $50.00 is assessed for eachexamination taken. If a student fails to achieve a passing score and requests to102 / MERCER UNIVERSITY
