Limitation in Completion of RequirementsA student in the Ed.S. program must complete all requirements within a six-year period.Time limits shall be computed from and include the first semester of credit applied tothe degree program. Students who do not enroll for three consecutive semesters are subjectto all program policies, guidelines, and requirements in place at the time of re-enrollment.Transient StatusAn applicant who is currently admitted to full graduate standing in a degree programat another institution may be admitted as a transient student by submitting the applicationforms, the application fee, and a letter of permission from his/her institution in lieu of transcripts.Course LoadIn order to qualify for full-time status, a graduate student must enroll in 9 hours persemester. Students may enroll part time. In order to qualify for financial aid, a graduatestudent must be fully admitted and must enroll for a minimum of 6 hours per semester.General Requirements for the DegreeThe Educational Specialist Degree in School Counseling requires a minimum of 30credit hours beyond the master’s degree. The 30 credit hours include a three hour seminarin Current Trends in Professional School Counseling and completion of an internshipand capstone project under the direction of a Mercer Counseling faculty member.Successful completion of a faculty developed comprehensive examination, which is partof the capstone project, is required for successful completion of the degree.Certain conditions must be met to transfer graduate credit to Mercer’s graduate program.The institution must be regionally accredited and the candidate must be admittedto the institution’s graduate program. Graduate work taken at other institutions must bepart of a planned program leading to a degree equivalent to the degree of EducationalSpecialist in School Counseling at Mercer. The work must be appropriate for the candidate’splanned program. The maximum amount of transferred credit is limited to 6 semesterhours. Only courses in which the candidate earned a “B” or better will be consideredfor transfer credit. Courses taken for another degree previously earned may not beapplied to the Ed.S.*Notice Regarding Acquiring School Counseling Certification:Candidates who hold a master’s degree in a counseling field other than SchoolCounseling may apply and have a transcript evaluation completed as part of the applicationprocess. Upon completion of the transcript evaluation one of the following two possibilitiesexists for these candidates:Candidates seeking initial certification in School Counseling and who hold a 54 hour(CACREP equivalent) master's degree in a counseling field other than School Counselingmay earn the program's recommendation for the School Counseling Level Six Certificateby completing the Ed.S. in School Counseling, and all of the following school specialtycourses: COUN 631, COUN 632, COUN 633, COUN 623, and COUN 640.Candidates seeking initial certification in School Counseling and who hold less thana 54 hour (CACREP curriculum equivalent) master’s degree in School Counseling or in a256 / MERCER UNIVERSITY
