PSLD 605. Leadership and Ethics in Public SafetyLeadership(3 hours)Students will examine the theoretical basis for ethics and to develop an understanding ofmethods used to resolve ethical dilemmas. A history of unethical decision-making will beexplored.PSLD 606. Seminar on Terrorism(3 hours)The purpose of this course is to examine how the war on terrorism has affected firstresponders such as police and fire departments, how it has transformed local and stategovernment planning, and how it has defined a new relationship between state and localgovernment.PSLD 625/725. Special Topics in Public SafetyLeadership(3 hours)(Cross-listed with CRJS 625/725)This course is designed to enable students to pursue a subject in depth that is not usuallytaught as part of the core or electives. The student must seek approval from the programcoordinator to register for this course.PSLD 630. Leadership and Corrections(3 hours)Students will develop an understanding of the historical problems that frame our contemporaryexperiences of corrections. Students will learn the complexity of correctionalorganizations and alternatives for dealing with current correctional issues and trends.PSLD 631. Cybercrime(3 hours)The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with the emergence, prevention, andcontrol of high tech crime. The student will synthesize conclusions in the areas ofresearch such as: information technologies, the sociology/ anthropology/psychology ofcyberspace, computer security, deviance, law, criminal justice and risk management, andstrategic thinking.PSLD 632. Internship(3 hours)Students will take three credit hours over the course of a semester of practicum, internship,field placement, or equivalent in the student's specialty field of study. The PublicSafety Leadership faculty will work in partnership with individual students to developinternship site placements. An internship report is required. Internship Fee.PSLD 633. The Budget Process(3 hours)This seminar provides the student with a working knowledge of performance budgeting.Planning, performance measurement, benchmarking, and evaluation will be addressed inrespect to local and state government budgeting. The intent is to present performancebudgeting not as a stand-alone technique, but as an extension of the traditional budgetprocess that reconciles financial and operational accountability.PSLD 635. Local Government, Media, and Politics(3 hours)This course defines the dynamics of public policy, elucidates the complexity intrinsic toeach stage of the process, and delves into the implications of public policy for public safetyleadership and society. The course incorporates contemporary examples with a varietyof creative exercises in the dynamics of public policy that demonstrate theoretical andpractical understanding of public safety politics.
