Monroe F. Swilley, Jr. Library"Learning happens here" is both the motto and the vision of the Monroe F. Swilley, Jr.Library. Students on the <strong>Atlanta</strong> <strong>Campus</strong> can pursue their research needs, both in this finefacility, and virtually via computer.Built in 1982, the library holds approximately 150,000 print books plus another 40,000electronic ones, 1.9 million microforms, 900 print journals, and 6,000 full-text electronic journals.These materials, plus videos, CD's, and DVD's support the programs of the six collegeson the campus.For materials that are inaccessible locally or online, the library may borrow them from<strong>Mercer</strong> <strong>University</strong>'s other libraries through BEARCAT, the campus's integrated library system.Additionally, the library offers an interlibrary loan service, which allows students toaccess a broad spectrum of materials from national and international sources. The SwilleyLibrary also belongs to the <strong>Atlanta</strong> Regional Council for Higher Education, a metro-area consortiumof educational institutions that share interlibrary loan and interlibrary use privileges.The library's other memberships include those in the <strong>Atlanta</strong> Health Sciences LibrariesConsortium, the Georgia Interactive Library Network, the American Theological LibraryAssociation, and the American Library Association.The library has hard-wired as well as wireless networks for use by students and facultywho have their own laptops or who wish to check out one of the library's laptops. For groupwork, students may check out one of twenty group study rooms equipped with white boardsand laptop connections. The library has two multimedia seminar rooms with computer projectionequipment that graduate students may use for computer simulations or presentations.Liaison librarians work with each college that is supported academically by the library.The liaisons offer customized library instruction in regular classrooms or in the fully equippedDr. Jean Hendricks Library Classroom, which is located on the lower level of the library.Specializing in reference work in their subject areas, liaisons also are outfitted with projectionequipment and laptops in order to lead students in hands-on learning. Moreover, they workto build the library's print and electronic collections collaboratively with the faculty of each college.Liaisons frequently serve as adjunct faculty in the colleges.The library is a cultural gathering point on campus, as well as a center of learning. Manystudents choose to study in the "quiet zone" on the lower level, surrounded by the quarterlyart exhibits hanging in the Brown Art Gallery; others study in the new lounge where they canarrange the furniture to meet their needs while enjoying a relaxing cup of coffee. Displays andexhibits from the library's Special Collections and Archives are scattered throughout thebuilding. Special Collections and Archives itself is open by appointment.The library has seating for 250 students and is open eighty-two hours per week. Afterhoursstudy is available virtually 24/7 by use of the library's 120+ databases for anyone witha computer, or in real time, after-hours study is available in the cafeteria which has ID cardaccess for safety and wireless connections for computer access to most of the Library’s databases.Special ProgramsGrants and Contracts OfficeThe Grants and Contracts Office (GCO) at <strong>Mercer</strong> <strong>University</strong> is the centralized administrativeoffice that oversees the entire award process from the proposal submission to theaward close out. This includes proposals and awards in support of any sponsored programto include Research, Instruction, Training, and Community Service Projects. GCO has anenhanced database that houses the <strong>University</strong>'s grant and contract information.22 / MERCER UNIVERSITY
