<strong>tw<strong>in</strong></strong>-Path ® <strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong>YOUR SLING AND RIGGING SPECIALIST7.0 - Mechanical Considerations7.1 Determ<strong>in</strong>e the weight of the load. The weight of the load shall be with<strong>in</strong> the rated capacity of the sl<strong>in</strong>g.7.2 Select a sl<strong>in</strong>g hav<strong>in</strong>g suitable characteristics for the type of load, hitch and environment.7.3 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs shall not be loaded <strong>in</strong> excess of the rated capacity. Consideration shall be given to angle of lift whichmay affect the lift<strong>in</strong>g capacity. Diameters of p<strong>in</strong>s and edges also may affect the capacity of the lift<strong>in</strong>gsl<strong>in</strong>g.7.4 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs used <strong>in</strong> a choker shall not be forced to tighten around the load by pound<strong>in</strong>g with hammers or otherobjects. Choker hitches are the least effective way to use a sl<strong>in</strong>g based on capacity. Two chokers shouldbe used to balance the load. One choker <strong>in</strong> the center of the load may create an unbalanced situationwhich could lead to an accident.7.5 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs used <strong>in</strong> a basket hitch must have the load balanced to prevent slippage and accidents.7.6 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs used with fitt<strong>in</strong>gs shall be compatible with the fitt<strong>in</strong>gs used. The lift<strong>in</strong>g capacity shallbe rated at thelower of the fitt<strong>in</strong>g or sl<strong>in</strong>g. Fitt<strong>in</strong>g open<strong>in</strong>gs shall be of the proper shape and size to assure that the sl<strong>in</strong>gwill seat properly.7.7 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs shall be protected from cutt<strong>in</strong>g and edges. All protrusions and abrasive surfaces will be kept fromcontact with the sl<strong>in</strong>g. Where unavoidable situations develop padd<strong>in</strong>g shall be placed between the sl<strong>in</strong>gand the load. The p<strong>in</strong> area of a shackle can cause synthetic <strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> to cut and plac<strong>in</strong>g synthetic<strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> on the p<strong>in</strong> should be avoided unless it is protected.7.8 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs shall not be dragged on the floor or drawn across other surfaces which may damage the sl<strong>in</strong>g.7.9 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs shall not be twisted or tied <strong>in</strong> knots to shorten.7.10 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs shall not be pulled from under loads rest<strong>in</strong>g on the sl<strong>in</strong>g.7.11 Do not drop objects on <strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> or run over them with vehicles.7.12 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs which are damaged shall not be used.7.13 Sl<strong>in</strong>g hitches must provide control of the load.7.14 Portions of the human body shall be kept from between the sl<strong>in</strong>g and the load and from between the sl<strong>in</strong>gand any attachment to lift<strong>in</strong>g devices such as hooks.7.15 Personnel shall stand clear of suspended loads.7.16 Personnel shall not ride on the sl<strong>in</strong>g or suspended loads.7.17 Avoid snatch or shock load<strong>in</strong>g.7.18 Twist<strong>in</strong>g and k<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g the legs of the sl<strong>in</strong>g shall be avoided.7.19 Load applied to the hook should be centered <strong>in</strong> the bowl of the hooks. Do not po<strong>in</strong>t load the hook.7.20 Dur<strong>in</strong>g lift<strong>in</strong>g with or without the load all personnel shall be alert for possible snagg<strong>in</strong>g.HEADQUARTERS: 55 James E.
