InItIal InsPectIon – Before any new or repaired sl<strong>in</strong>g is placed <strong>in</strong> service, it shallbe <strong>in</strong>spected to <strong>in</strong>sure that the correct sl<strong>in</strong>g is be<strong>in</strong>g used, as well as to determ<strong>in</strong>e thatthe sl<strong>in</strong>g meets the requirements of this specification.b. fReQUent InsPectIon – This <strong>in</strong>spection should be made by the person handl<strong>in</strong>g thesl<strong>in</strong>g each time the sl<strong>in</strong>g is used.c. PeRIoDIc InsPectIon – This <strong>in</strong>spection shall be conducted by designated personnel.Frequency of <strong>in</strong>spection should be based on:1. Frequency of sl<strong>in</strong>g use2. Severity of service conditions3. Experience ga<strong>in</strong>ed on the service life of <strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> used <strong>in</strong> similar applications4. Periodic <strong>in</strong>spections should be conducted at least monthly5.5 - PossIble Defects5.5.1 A sl<strong>in</strong>g shall be removed from service if any defects such as the follow<strong>in</strong>g are visible:a. Acid or alkali burnsb. Melt<strong>in</strong>g, charr<strong>in</strong>g, or weld spatter of any part of the sl<strong>in</strong>gc. Holes, tears, cuts, snags or embedded particlesd. Broken or worn stitch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> load bear<strong>in</strong>g splicese. Excessive abrasive wearf. Knots <strong>in</strong> any part of the sl<strong>in</strong>gg. Distortion and excessive pitt<strong>in</strong>g or corrosion or broken fitt<strong>in</strong>gsh. Other apparent defects which cause doubt as to the strength of the sl<strong>in</strong>gi. If sl<strong>in</strong>g rated capacity or sl<strong>in</strong>g material identification is miss<strong>in</strong>g or not readable5.6 - InsPectIon RecoRDs5.6.1 Written <strong>in</strong>spection records, utiliz<strong>in</strong>g the identification for each sl<strong>in</strong>g as established bythe user, should be kept on file for all <strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong>. These records should show a descriptionof the new sl<strong>in</strong>g and its condition on each subsequent <strong>in</strong>spection.5.7 - RePaIR of Web slInGs5.7.1 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs shall be repaired only by a sl<strong>in</strong>g manufacturer. When repaired by other than theorig<strong>in</strong>al manufacturer, the sl<strong>in</strong>g shall be permanently marked to identify the repairagent.5.7.2 All repaired <strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> shall be proof-tested to two (2) times its newly assigned ratedcapacity, berfore be<strong>in</strong>g put back <strong>in</strong>to service. Certification of proof-test should beprovided.5.7.3 Temporary repairs of either webb<strong>in</strong>g, fitt<strong>in</strong>gs, or stitch<strong>in</strong>g shall not be permitted.HEADQUARTERS: 55 James E.
