Determ<strong>in</strong>e weight of the load. The weight of the load shall be with<strong>in</strong> therated capacity of the sl<strong>in</strong>g.5.2.2 Select the proper sl<strong>in</strong>g hav<strong>in</strong>g suitable characteristics for the type of load, hitch and environment.5.2.3 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs shall not be loaded <strong>in</strong> excess of the rated capacity. Consideration should be given tothe angle of lift (sl<strong>in</strong>g-to-load angle), which affects rated capacity.5.2.4 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs with fitt<strong>in</strong>gs which are used <strong>in</strong> a choker hitch shall be of sufficient length to assure thatthe chok<strong>in</strong>g <strong>action</strong> is on the webb<strong>in</strong>g, and never on the other fitt<strong>in</strong>g.5.2.5 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs used <strong>in</strong> a basket hitch shall have the load balanced to prevent slippage.5.2.6 The open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> fitt<strong>in</strong>gs shall be the proper shape and size to <strong>in</strong>sure that the fitt<strong>in</strong>g will seatproperly <strong>in</strong> the hook or other attachments.5.2.7 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs shall always be protected from be<strong>in</strong>g cut by sharp corners, sharp edges, protrusionsor abrasive surfaces.5.2.8 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs shall not be dragged on the floor or over an abrasive surface.5.2.9 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs shall not be twisted or tied <strong>in</strong>to knots, or jo<strong>in</strong>ed by knott<strong>in</strong>g.5.2.10 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs shall not be pulled from under loads when the load is rest<strong>in</strong>g on the sl<strong>in</strong>g.5.2.11 Do not drop <strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> equipped with metal fitt<strong>in</strong>gs.5.2.12 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs that appear to be damaged shall not be used unless <strong>in</strong>spected and accepted asusable under Section 5.2.5.2.13 The sl<strong>in</strong>g shall be hitched <strong>in</strong> a manner provid<strong>in</strong>g control of the load.5.2.14 Portions of the human body should be kept from between the sl<strong>in</strong>g and the load, and frombetween the sl<strong>in</strong>g and the crane hook or hoist hook.5.2.15 Personnel should stand clear of the suspended load.5.2.16 Personnel shall not ride the sl<strong>in</strong>g.5.2.17 Shock load<strong>in</strong>g should be avoided.5.2.18 Twist<strong>in</strong>g the legs (branches) shall be avoided.5.2.19 Load applied to the hook should be centered <strong>in</strong> the base (bowl) of hook to prevent po<strong>in</strong>tload<strong>in</strong>g on the hook.5.2.20 Dur<strong>in</strong>g lift<strong>in</strong>g, with or without the load, personnel shall be alert for possible snagg<strong>in</strong>g.5.2.21 The <strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong>' legs (branches) should conta<strong>in</strong> or support the load from the sides above thecenter of gravity when us<strong>in</strong>g a basket hitch.5.2.22 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs shall be long enough so that the rated load (rated capacity) is adequate when theangle of the legs (branches) is taken <strong>in</strong>to consideration.HEADQUARTERS: 55 James E.
