YOUR SLING AND RIGGING SPECIALIST<strong>tw<strong>in</strong></strong>-Path ® <strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong>10.0 - Inspections of Tw<strong>in</strong>-Path ® Products10.1 Tell-Tails should extend past the tag area of each sl<strong>in</strong>g. If both Tell-Tails are not visible, remove the sl<strong>in</strong>gfrom service. If any part of the sl<strong>in</strong>g shows evidence of chemical degradation, remove it from service. Sendto manufacturer for repair evaluation.10.2 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs should be <strong>in</strong>spected for evidence of cutt<strong>in</strong>g or tear<strong>in</strong>g of the outer cover. Sl<strong>in</strong>gs with cuts shouldbe removed from service and sent back to the manufacturer for repair evaluation. Damage to the covermay <strong>in</strong>dicate core damage.10.3 Inspect <strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> for evidence of heat damage. Aramid Sparkeater Sl<strong>in</strong>gs should not be exposed to temperaturesover 149°C/300°F. K-Spec ® and Polyester Core Sl<strong>in</strong>gs should not be exposed to temperaturesabove 82°C/180°F. Cold temperature exposure down to m<strong>in</strong>us 40°C/m<strong>in</strong>us 40°F do not effect the strengthof the products. Other temperatures should be referred to the manufacturer.10.4 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs us<strong>in</strong>g alum<strong>in</strong>um fitt<strong>in</strong>gs shall not be used where fumes, vapors, sprays, or mists of alkalis or acidsare present.10.5 Tw<strong>in</strong>-Path ® Lift<strong>in</strong>g Sl<strong>in</strong>gs and any fitt<strong>in</strong>gs attached should be the subject of frequent and regular <strong>in</strong>spections.In addition to the <strong>in</strong>itial <strong>in</strong>spection by a competent person and frequent written <strong>in</strong>spections, the<strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> should be visually <strong>in</strong>spected before each use.10.6 Written <strong>in</strong>spections should be performed as required and documents of such <strong>in</strong>spection by a competentperson shall be kept on file <strong>in</strong> the safety department of the plant or site where used. Inspections may bedone more often based on frequency of use, severity of conditions, experience of past service life.10.7 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs should be exam<strong>in</strong>ed throughout their length for abrasion, cuts, heat damage, fitt<strong>in</strong>g distortion ordamage, tag legibility, and if any doubts are held by the <strong>in</strong>spector, the sl<strong>in</strong>g should be removed fromservice. Core <strong>in</strong>tegrity is determ<strong>in</strong>ed by fiber optic light transfer if this type of tell-tail is <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> the sl<strong>in</strong>g.If a deterioration is found, the sl<strong>in</strong>g must be removed from service and returned to the manufacturer forevaluation.10.8 Sl<strong>in</strong>gs removed from service that are not capable of repair should be destroyed and rendered completelyunfit for future use.10.9 Abrasion, heat damage or cuts to the cover may <strong>in</strong>dicate a loss of strength to the load core and these<strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> should not be used until evaluated by the manufacturer. At area of damage, cover should beopened and the core yarns counted and visually <strong>in</strong>spected.11.0 - Test Procedures for Complete Tw<strong>in</strong>-Path ® Sl<strong>in</strong>g Products11.1 For proof test<strong>in</strong>g, the p<strong>in</strong>s shall be 1˝ diameter or larger.11.2 Proof tests shall consist of pull<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> to twice their rated capacity. Sl<strong>in</strong>gs shall be held at the prooftest limit for a m<strong>in</strong>imum of 15 seconds and then the tension may be released.11.3 Test<strong>in</strong>g of Tw<strong>in</strong>-Path ® Sl<strong>in</strong>g products and load yarn shall be on a test<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e, which meets or exceedsthe standards as described <strong>in</strong> ASME E-4.11.4 Break test<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> shall be as above with results documented. P<strong>in</strong> size for break test<strong>in</strong>g should be adiameter equal to half the nom<strong>in</strong>al sl<strong>in</strong>g width, or larger.11.5 Proof test<strong>in</strong>g is mandatory for every newly manufactured and repaired Tw<strong>in</strong>-Path ® sl<strong>in</strong>g.11.6 After the sl<strong>in</strong>g is proof tested, the Tell-Tails should then be trimmed to length prior to shipment.11.7 Repaired fitt<strong>in</strong>gs or <strong>sl<strong>in</strong>gs</strong> shall be proof-tested before they are returned to service.THESE RECOMMENDED STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS HAVE BEEN FORMULATED AS A GUIDE TO USERS, INDUSTRY ANDGOVERNMENT TO INSURE THE PROPER USE, MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION OF TWIN-PATH ® LIFTING SLING PRODUCTS.HEADQUARTERS: 55 James E.
