Appendix DCommercial catch monitoring programs.Table D-1 provides a list of the major Canadian commercial fisheries and the approachused to derive the sockeye catch estimates. Most of information in this table wasobtained from Ryall and Ionson (2005). The details are provided under the followingcolumns headings:Fishery Location = the geographic location of each sockeye fishery defined interms of Pacific Fisheries Management Areas (PFMA); Fleet size = the average number of licenced vessels by gear type in 2004; Average Catch = average sockeye catch by fishery for 2001-2009;Fishing Gear = types of fishing gear used to harvest sockeye;% of Catch = portion of the total Canadian commercial catch harvested by eachcommercial fishery during the 2001-2009 period;Catch Reporting = reporting requirements for each fishery;Catch Monitoring System = a brief summary of the methods used to obtain catchmonitoring data from each fishery;Validation = the degree to which catch estimates are validated and any suspectedbiases associated with the catch estimates;Data Quality = qualitative ratings for accuracy, precision and reliability of thedata used to generate the catch estimates for the majority of the sockeye harvested(i.e., if seines catch estimates are “Good” and seines catch the majority of thesockeye, the rating will be “Good”);Accuracy = the degree managers can be confident that the reported catch reflectsthe actual harvest (“Fair” = likely biased low in some or most years; “Good” =any bias is likely to be small; “Very Good” = complete enumeration of the catch);Precision = generally unknown for most fisheries, estimates of precision areprovided where available and where catch estimates are a complete count, theprecision rating was “High”); andReliability = the degree managers can rely on the catch estimates for in-seasonand post-season assessments. These ratings are similar to the ratings for accuracy,except biased estimates that received a “Fair” rating for accuracy could receive a“Medium” rating for reliability, where the direction of the bias is known.D-1
