8-222 INTERACTIVE FAMILY HISTORIESReference: 1) Email, Jean (Wiles) Cecini to John Dorroh, January, 2002; 2) 1860Census, Sonoma County, CaliforniaJANE “JENNIE” BRYAN (2.9) is the daughter of Samuel Bryan and Margaret(Morrow) Bryan. Jennie was born on October 22, 1780 in North Carolina. Thisbirthdate may later than stated as Jennie would have been thirty at the time ofher marriage, none of her siblings are known to have been born in the 1780s. Itis known that Samuel Bryan had a daughter, Jane Bryan, who married DavidPinkerton (this is proven in the 1824 deed where Samuel Bryan gave “hisson-in-law the said David Pinkerton and his daughter Jane Pinkerton” fifty-twoacres of land). A marriage license was issued on October 22, 1810 in DavidsonCounty, Tennessee between David Pinkerton and “Jenny” Bryan. This appearsto be a good match for the marriage of Samuel’s daughter, Jane, to DavidPinkerton. David was born on February 20, 1787 and is the son of DavidPinkerton and Betsy Pinkerton. In 1830, there is a David Pinkerton (born 1790to 1800) living in Davidson County, Tennessee. However, there were known tobe two David Pinkertons of approximately the same age (the David unrelated theBryan line married Celia Barnes) living in Davidson County, Tennessee andtherefore it is impossible to determine which Pinkerton appeared in this censusrecord. In 1840, there was a David Pinkerton (born 1780 to 1790) listed in the1840 census of Davidson County, Tennessee. This David Pinkerton appears tobe too old to the man who married Jane Bryan but the ages that appear censusrecords are known to become less reliable as the head of family becomes older.David Pinkerton died prior to December, 1842 when property was sold from hisestate as indicated in his settlement was recorded in Davidson County,Tennessee recorded on May 15, 1845. Cash was paid to Samuel Pinkerton andanother David Pinkerton. “Ginny” Pinkerton received “her share of rent 1843for $13.33 (the rent for 1843 was listed as $40.00 of income into the estate). The record further states that ”the above settlement was made by and with JanePinkerton Admrx (?) October 26, 1844." It appears that David and JanePinkerton were married for over twenty years and that they had children as Janeonly received one-third of the rent for 1843. According to deed, court minutesand Bible records, David and Jennie Pinkerton were the parents of eightchildren:. . . Anna Pinkerton (2.9.1), b. 1815, Tennessee. . . Eliza Pinkerton. . . James Pinkerton (2.9.3), b. 1820, Tennessee. . . Samuel Pinkerton (2.9.4), b. June 17, 1818, Tennessee. . . David C. Pinkerton (2.9.5), b 1822, Tennessee. . . Margaret Pinkerton (2.9.6), b. June 7, 1813, Tennessee. . . Joseph Pinkerton (2.9.7), b. 1827, Tennessee. . . Mary Jane Pinkerton (2.9.8), b. 1826, TennesseeAccording to Bible records, David Pinkerton died on June 23, 1842 in DavidsonCounty, Tennessee. This is definitely the David Pinkerton that married JaneBryan because it is known that Jane Bryan’s husband (David Pinkerton) diedshortly prior to December, 1842 according to probate records. Eliza Pinkertonmarried Joseph Spence and they had at least one son: - James Spence. Therewas definitely another David Pinkerton (born 1789 in Virginia) who married
