8-242 INTERACTIVE FAMILY HISTORIES(Orton) Pickard / Altum died prior to 1866. Therefore, Joseph Altum wouldqualify for one share as a guardian for the children of Margaret (Orton) Pickardand would qualify for one share as the guardian of the children by Joseph Altumand Margaret (Orton) Pickard / Altum. Margaret heirs should have been entitledonly to one share that would be equally divided among all of her children (nomatter how many marriages). Joseph may have received two shares because oftwo young families that he took responsibility for and no one was aware of whatthe heirs of Margaret (Orton) Pickard / Altum should receive. Anotherpossibility is that Joseph Altum was the guardian for other minor children ofsibling of Margaret (Orton) Pickard / Altum. According to Sharon Eckstein, adescendant of Mary (Orton) Lakin, Joseph Altum was the guardian for theminors of Mary (Orton) Lakin as well (there are no court records located to dateindicating this). The third minor challenge was to indentify what happened to Mary (Orton)Lakin between 1851 and 1866. The obvious scenario is that Mary (Orton) Lakindied prior to 1866 and that Thomas and Mary Lakin had no children. Again, theobvious conclusion is not correct as Thomas and Mary Lakin had at least threedaughters that were still living in 1866 (they were omitted from the estate ofJoseph Orton for some reason). A fourth minor issue is that William Orton wasfor some reason not included in the estate of Henry M. Bryan when he wouldobviously qualified for a share. From the above research, Joseph and MaryOrton were the parents of at least ten children:. . . Samuel R. Orton (2.10.1), b. 1811, Tennessee. . . Margaret M. Orton (2.10.2), b. 1813, Tennessee. . . William H. Orton (2.10.3), b. 1815, Tennessee. . . James M. Orton (2.10.4), b. 1817, Tennessee. . . Jane P. Orton (2.10.5), b. November 4, 1818, Tennessee. . . Henry Orton (2.10.6), b. February 22, 1820, Tennessee. . . Nancy Caroline Orton (2.10.7), b. January 10, 1821, Williamson Co., Tennessee. . . Mary Ann Orton (2.10.8), b. 1824, Williamson County, Tennessee. . . Sarah Elizabeth Orton (2.10.9), b. 1828, Williamson County, Tennessee. . . Rebecca E. Orton, b. 1830, Williamson County, TennesseeIn 1820, Joseph Orton was living in Williamson County, Tennessee. From 1840to 1860, Joseph Orton was living in Greene County, Illinois. According toMyrna Madigan, Joseph Orton died on May 28, 1864 in Greene County, Illinois. On June 10, 1858, Rebecca Orton married Robert Jackson in Greene County,Illinois.References: 1) 1820 Census, Williamson County, Tennessee; 2) 1840 and 1850Censuses, Greene County, Illinois; 3) Estate Papers, Henry M.
