CENSUS RESULTS92.1.1 Total number of farms <strong>and</strong> trendThe number of large scale farms has increased from 480in 1987/88 to 1,212 in 2002/03. Most of this increase wasduring the period 1987/88 to 1994/95 representing anincrease of 116 percent. The increase in the number oflarge scale farms over the period 1994/95 to 2002/03 wasmuch less at only 17 percent (from 1,039 to 1,212 largescale farms) (Chart 2.1). The private sector (privateregistered operators (36%) <strong>and</strong> private non registeredoperators (19%) <strong>and</strong> other private operators (30%)) hasthe largest number of large scale farms (85%). The result of this is that parastatals, whilst havingthe smallest number of operators (44), have the largest area of l<strong>and</strong> per operator (7,434 ha per farm. Kilimanjaro, Dar esSalaam, Mwanza, Coast <strong>and</strong> Iringa. have between 50<strong>and</strong> 100 large scale farms The remaining regionshave a small number of large scale farms with Mara,Tabora, Dodoma, Kagera, Rukwa <strong>and</strong> Lindi havingthe smallest number (Chart 2.2).Some regional tends are difficult to determine: from 1987/88 to1994/95, Dar es Salaam was included in coast region <strong>and</strong> Manyararegion was included in Arusha region (Table 2.1).From 1987/88 to 1994/95 the rate of increase in the number oflarge scale farms was highest in Kigoma region (467%) followedby Morogoro <strong>and</strong> Shinyanga. However, in some regions thenumber of large scale farms decreased with the highest rate ofdecrease found in Lindi followed by Kagera (Table 2.1).In terms of number of farms the highest concentration is in thenorthern part of Tanzania (over 100 per region).
