CENSUS RESULTS221,436 tonnes representing 72.9 percent of the total root <strong>and</strong> tuber crop production. This is followed by sweet potatoes with97 tonnes (4.9%), cassava with 61 tonnes (3.1%) <strong>and</strong> cocoyam with 55 tonnes (2.8%).The area planted with Irish potatoes is much greater than other root <strong>and</strong> tuber crops (253 ha, 51.4% of the roots <strong>and</strong> tuberplanted area). This is followed by cocoyam with 86 hectares (17.5%) <strong>and</strong> cassava with 38 hectares (7.7%). Sweet potatoesare grown in minor quantities. However the yield1994/95 2002/03<strong>Agriculture</strong> Yeardropped from 6.2 tonnes per hectare in 1994/95 to5.7 tonnes per hectare in 2002/03 (Chart 2.41)Area (Ha) Yield (T/Ha)which indicates that the increase in production was due to an increase in the planted area <strong>and</strong> not due to an increase inproductivity.Kilimanjaro has the largest area planted with Irishpotatoes covering 185 hectares (73%) followed byIringa with 51 hectares (20%). Another fiveregions had small areas: Tanga with 5 hectares(2%), Tabora with 5 hectares (2%), Kagera with 4hectares (2%), Dar es Salaam with 2 hectares (1%)<strong>and</strong> Manyara with only 1 hectare.
