CENSUS RESULTS16From 1994/95 to 2002/03 the increase in production washigher for barley compared to other cereals. Barleyproduction increased by 471 percent from 2,028 tonnesharvested in 1994/95 to 11,589 tonnes harvested in2002/03. This was followed by Maize increased at 14percent. This is followed by wheat (20.1% of the area planted withcereals), barley (12.3%), paddy (10.3%) andsorghum (1.2%). CENSUS RESULTS17About 68 percent of the total area with cereals onlarge scale farms is found in three regions locatedin the northern part of the country. Manyara has the20,000Chart 2.24: Area Planted with Cereals and Percent of Land Area withCereals by Region50.0largest area planted with cereals (17,367 ha,20.2%), followed by Kilimanjaro (11,200 ha,12.6%) and Arusha (7,549 ha, 11.3%). Very smallquantities of cereals are grown in Lindi, Dar esSalaam and Kagera. Thisrepresents 77 percent of the total crop growingfarms during long rainy season and 25 percent inthe short rainy season. However,production increased by 14.3 percent from 47,666tonnes to 54,466 over the same period and resultedin an increase in the yield of maize from 1.4 tonnesper hectare in 1994/95 to 2.0 tonnes per hectare in2002/03 (Chart 2.25).
