CENSUS RESULTS57were kept on only 50 farms which had 446,714 chickens (5,800 indigenous, 209,066 layers <strong>and</strong> 215,225 broilers) on 1 stOctober 2003.T hese farms were mainly located in Dar es Salaam, Pwani, Arusha, Mwanza <strong>and</strong> Tanga regions. Theaverage number improved chicken per farm is 1,013 heads.The number of layers has increased sharply in the last nine years. It increased from 87,124 to 216,474 with the growth rateof 12 percent per year for the period 1994/95 to 2002/03. For the broilers, the population increased from 158,125 to217,741 for the period 1994/95 to 2003/03 with a growth rate of 4.1 percent per year. Cow milk production during thedry season drops by approximately 17 percent from 46,519liters per day in the wet season to 38,804 liters per day inthe dry season.In the wet season the number of farm holdings producingmilk in large scale farms was 629.
