CENSUS RESULTS362.7.5 Method of irrigation applicationSix methods of irrigation application werecommonly used namely flood irrigation, pipe andsprinkler, hose reel sprinkler, center pivotsprinkler, linear boom irrigation and drip irrigation(Chart 2.81). Flood irrigation was used by thelargest number of farms (127 farms, 46%) followedby pipe and sprinkler (43 farms, 16%), linear boomirrigation (23 farms, 8%), horse reel sprinkler (16farms, 6%), drip irrigation (14 farms, 5%) andcenter point sprinkler (7 farms, 3%). Other meansof application contributed 16 percent of total farmsirrigating (Chart 2.81).Mbeya has the largest number of farms applyingflood irrigation (17%) followed Kilimanjaro(15%), Arusha (14.2%) and Ruvuma (10.2%). Theremaining 833 farms (69%) had no the facilities.Iringa was the only region where more than 50percent of the farms had erosion control or waterharvesting facilities. Out of 68 farms found inIringa, 54 farms (79.4%) had erosioncontrol/water harvesting facilities. CENSUS RESULTS37On large scale farms, Iringa has the highestpercent of farms with these facilities (79% of thetotal large scale farms) followed by Kigoma(47%), Mara (41%), Manyara (37%), Mwanzaand Rukwa with 36 percent each. Regions withthe lowest proportion of total farms practicingerosion control include Dar es Salaam, Kageraand Mtwara. No erosion control or waterharvesting facilities found in Lindi (large scalefarms), (Chart 2.84).2.8.1 Type of erosion control / waterharvesting structureErosion control bunds are the most commonstructure on large scale farms (6,729 structures or22% of the total number of erosion control/waterharvesting structures). This is followed by Treebelts (20%), Water harvesting bunds (16%), (Chart2.85).Iringa has the largest number of erosion controlstructures with 11,806 structures (39.4%)followed Manyara with 3,562 erosion controlstructures (11.9%) and Morogoro with 2,768structures (9.2%). Small numbers of erosioncontrol structures were found in Shinyanga, Dares Salaam, Mtwara, Coast, Kagera and Lindi(Chart 2.86).2.9 Sheds and StoresSheds and stores on large scale farms includemachinery sheds, fertilizer stores, agrochemicalstores and produce stores.
