CENSUS RESULTSThe number of large scale farms growing wheatduring the long rainy season was 76 farms and 6in the short rainy season. This represents 4.6percent of the total crop growing farms duringthe long rainy season and 1.2 percent in the shortrainy season. The total production of wheatduring the census year was 30,606 tonnes.Production has decreased by 19.1 percent from37,802 tonnes in 1994/95 to 30,606 tonnesharvested in 2002/03. This was due to a decreasein the planted area of wheat 37,295 ha to 19,640ha. The yield increased from 1.0 tonne perhectare in 1994/95 to 2.9 tonnes per hectare in2002/03, which to some extent compensates forthe large decrease in planted area (Chart 2.31).Wheat is mainly produced by large scale farmsfound in northern part of the country. Manyarahas the largest area planted with wheat (5,694 ha,53.5%) followed by Kilimanjaro with 2,620hectares (24.6%) and Arusha with 1,862 hectares(17.5%). Also, Manyara has the highestproportion of land with wheat in the countryfollowed by Kilimanjaro and Arusha (Chart2.32).Area (Ha)Percent of Total AreaPlantedChart 2.31: Time Sreies of Wheat Planted Area and Yield40,00035,00030,00025,00020,00015,00010,0005,00060.050.040.030.020.010.00.0037,2951.010,6401994/95 2002/03Agriculture YearArea (Ha)Yield (T/HaChart 2.32: Percent of Wheat Area Planted and Percent of Total Landwith Wheat by RegionManyaraKilimanjaroArushaIringaMbeyaSingidaRuvumaRukwaTangaDodomaMorogoroCoastDar es SalaamRegionsPercent of Land2.9LindiMtwaraTaboraKigomaShinyangaKageraMwanzaMaraProportion of Total Land7.006.005.004.003.002.001.000.003.53.02.52.01.51.00.50.0Yield (T/Ha)Percent Area of TotalLand Area19The area planted per wheat growing farm isgreater in Kilimanjaro and Manyara.
