CENSUS RESULTS18The planted area per maize growing farm islargest in Tabora, followed by Manyara,Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Dodoma. Thesmallest area planted with maize per flargescale farm is found in Mwanza and Kagera(Chart 2.27).- PaddyThe number of large scale farms growingpaddy during the long rainy season was 135farms and 59 in the short rainy season. Thisrepresents 8.3 percent of the total cropgrowing farms during long rainy season and10.8 percent in the short rainy season. Thetotal production of paddy during the censusyear was 11,453 tonnes. Production hasdecreased by 34.1 percent from 17,380 tonnesharvested in 1994/95 to 11,453 tonnesharvested in 2002/03. This was due to areduction in the planted area over the sameperiod from 7,500 ha to 5,500 ha. Over thethis period the yield of paddy in large scalefarms increased from 2.3 tonnes per hectare to2.6 tonnes per hectare (Chart 2.28). Like withmaize, this contrasts with the decreasingyields/hectare by smallholders where itdeclined erratically from 1.7t/ha to 1.0t/haover the same period.Large Scale farm production of paddy ismainly concentrated in Morogoro region with1,689 hectares (31.1% of total paddy producedin large scale farms) followed by Mbeya (754hectares, 13.9%) and Tanga (743 hectares,13.7%). The highest proportion of land withpaddy in the country is found in Tabora andShinyanga (Chart 2.29). CENSUS RESULTSThe number of large scale farms growing wheatduring the long rainy season was 76 farms and 6in the short rainy season. This represents 4.6percent of the total crop growing farms duringthe long rainy season and 1.2 percent in the shortrainy season. The total production of wheatduring the census year was 30,606 tonnes.Production has decreased by 19.1 percent from37,802 tonnes in 1994/95 to 30,606 tonnesharvested in 2002/03. This was due to a decreasein the planted area of wheat 37,295 ha to 19,640ha. The yield increased from 1.0 tonne perhectare in 1994/95 to 2.9 tonnes per hectare in2002/03, which to some extent compensates forthe large decrease in planted area (Chart 2.31).Wheat is mainly produced by large scale farmsfound in northern part of the country. Manyarahas the largest area planted with wheat (5,694 ha,53.5%) followed by Kilimanjaro with 2,620hectares (24.6%) and Arusha with 1,862 hectares(17.5%).
