Almost four fifths <strong>of</strong> private nurs<strong>in</strong>g homes <strong>of</strong>fered residents theopportunity to engage <strong>in</strong> purposeful activity (Figure 6.8). In contrast, only one third<strong>of</strong> district/community hospitals allowed such participation. Generally, theopportunity <strong>for</strong> participation is higher <strong>in</strong> welfare homes than <strong>in</strong> other public facilities,reflect<strong>in</strong>g the lower levels <strong>of</strong> dependency <strong>in</strong> the <strong>for</strong>mer compared to public geriatrichomes/hospitals and district/community hospitals.Hav<strong>in</strong>g the opportunity to participate does not <strong>in</strong>dicate actual participation.Table 6.13 shows that while residents may generally have the opportunity toengage <strong>in</strong> household tasks, participation levels are quite low. Lay<strong>in</strong>g tables andgarden<strong>in</strong>g tend to be the activities that residents do most, with garden<strong>in</strong>g mostlikely to occur with<strong>in</strong> private nurs<strong>in</strong>g home sett<strong>in</strong>gs. The lower level <strong>of</strong> dependency<strong>in</strong> welfare homes is reflected <strong>in</strong> the relatively high level <strong>of</strong> resident <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong>activities such as lay<strong>in</strong>g tables and mak<strong>in</strong>g beds.
