Appendix ThreeResident InterviewSchedules262The interview guides were used flexibly. The researcher followed the lead of theresident participants rather than imposing his/her agenda on the interview; questionswere asked where appropriate in the conversation. Two versions of ResidentInterview Schedules were employed: the first was used when resident participantswere articulate and fluent while the second was used if the resident participanthad difficulty communicating and comprised of closed questions which facilitatedresident participants to answer yes/no only. A series of cards were printed with yes/no, very satisfied/satisfied/not satisfied etc. This allowed participants to point to ananswer if that was easier for them. Normally it was possible to glean more thanyes/no through the participant’s non-verbal communication.
