Chapter Five<strong>Quality</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Long</strong>-<strong>Stay</strong> <strong>Care</strong> Facilities:Focus Group F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs5.1 Introduction96In this chapter the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> the focus group <strong>in</strong>terviews are reported. Focusgroups were conducted with a sample <strong>of</strong> nurse managers representative <strong>of</strong> thefive facility types. A total <strong>of</strong> seven focus groups were held: three <strong>in</strong> Dubl<strong>in</strong>, two <strong>in</strong>Galway and one each <strong>in</strong> Cork and Donegal. Participants were encouraged to talkabout the broad topics <strong>of</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> life, quality <strong>of</strong> care, dependency, staff<strong>in</strong>g andfuture policy. Focus groups proved to be a valuable method <strong>for</strong> collect<strong>in</strong>g data fromservice providers across facility types that differed geographically, organisationallyand <strong>in</strong> approach to deliver<strong>in</strong>g care to older people. The data provided rich contextual<strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation and helped to <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>m the development <strong>of</strong> the survey tool. Analysis<strong>of</strong> the data revealed six key themes: measur<strong>in</strong>g dependency, issues <strong>in</strong> staff<strong>in</strong>g,recruit<strong>in</strong>g and reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g staff, education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g quality <strong>of</strong> life,and policy issues.5.2 Measur<strong>in</strong>g DependencyThis theme focused on participants’ experiences <strong>of</strong> dependency measurement,their perception <strong>of</strong> its purpose and the issues they encountered <strong>in</strong> measur<strong>in</strong>g residentdependency. The majority <strong>of</strong> participants considered measur<strong>in</strong>g resident dependencyto be useful.
