The Council accepts that the cultural shift necessary to translate these values <strong>in</strong>toaction is, by no means, <strong>in</strong>significant and it recognises that such a shift requires thesusta<strong>in</strong>ed provision <strong>of</strong> dedicated assistance, guidance, encouragement and supportto long-stay care staff.Education and Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> Age Friendly<strong>Long</strong>-<strong>Stay</strong> <strong>Care</strong> ServicesParticipants <strong>in</strong> the nurse manager focus groups concluded that a programme <strong>of</strong>education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is required to facilitate the development <strong>of</strong> an ethos <strong>of</strong> carethat focuses on quality <strong>of</strong> life and addresses the attitud<strong>in</strong>al and organisational changesrequired <strong>in</strong> this regard. They also highlighted that tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g opportunities are limited<strong>for</strong> those work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the sector and noted that the traditional focus <strong>of</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>long-stay care staff has been on the process <strong>of</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g care delivery only.The Council has previously asserted its concern to promote education andtra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> an age friendly society, lead<strong>in</strong>g to a better understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>age<strong>in</strong>g and older people <strong>in</strong> all walks <strong>of</strong> life and particularly where decisionsaffect<strong>in</strong>g older people are be<strong>in</strong>g taken (Delaney et al., 2005). The Council will,there<strong>for</strong>e, endeavour to support the development <strong>of</strong> education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<strong>for</strong> age friendly long-stay care services <strong>in</strong> partnership with other agenciesand recommends that together with a focus on the quality <strong>of</strong> life doma<strong>in</strong>soutl<strong>in</strong>ed previously, a number <strong>of</strong> further strands be <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:21age awareness tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gquality assurance tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gtra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> consultation.The Council recommends that standards <strong>for</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and development plansthat have a specific quality <strong>of</strong> life focus be drawn up <strong>for</strong> all staff work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>long-stay care facilities, and advocates that staff should be provided withopportunities to avail <strong>of</strong> such education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.
