Chapter ElevenActivities and Therapies11.1 Introduction200This chapter exam<strong>in</strong>es the opportunities with<strong>in</strong> the long-stay care sector <strong>for</strong>residents to pursue mean<strong>in</strong>gful and purposeful activities. It explores residents’perceptions <strong>of</strong> the opportunities available with<strong>in</strong> long-stay care. Respondentsdescribed the activities, if any, which were <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>in</strong> their facility, the extent towhich they participated <strong>in</strong> these and reasons they did or did not participate. Somealso discussed activities they would like to pursue which were not currently on<strong>of</strong>fer. Staff described the activities with<strong>in</strong> their facilities, their participation <strong>in</strong> runn<strong>in</strong>gthese and their perception <strong>of</strong> resident participation. Four categories were identifiedwith<strong>in</strong> this theme: purposeful activity, therapeutic activity, outdoor activities, andmak<strong>in</strong>g activities work.11.2 Purposeful ActivityThis category focused on the way <strong>in</strong> which activities were structured, the extent towhich residents were consulted <strong>in</strong> determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g appropriate activities and the issueswhich impacted on residents’ participation (Table 11.1). Staff described the activitiesthat were <strong>of</strong>fered with<strong>in</strong> their facility each day. In some study sites there was aplanned provision <strong>of</strong> activities which changed on a daily basis. Activities on <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>cluded pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, b<strong>in</strong>go, danc<strong>in</strong>g, s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g, exercise classes, tai chi, watch<strong>in</strong>gtelevision, cards, scrabble and garden<strong>in</strong>g. These activities were <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>of</strong>fered toall residents as a group regardless <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest or capacity to participate. Most <strong>of</strong> thetime activities were <strong>of</strong>fered with<strong>in</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong> sitt<strong>in</strong>g area, although a few facilities<strong>Improv<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Quality</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Older</strong> <strong>People</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Long</strong>-<strong>Stay</strong> <strong>Care</strong> Sett<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> Ireland
