actively provid<strong>in</strong>g residents with opportunities <strong>for</strong> self-expressionprovid<strong>in</strong>g private space and private rooms <strong>for</strong> residentsfoster<strong>in</strong>g positive staff attitudes towards age<strong>in</strong>g and older people,e.g. encourag<strong>in</strong>g residents to assist with tasks <strong>in</strong> the facility as appropriatepreserv<strong>in</strong>g residents’ self-respect and self-esteem through enhanced staffengagement.The Council recommends that these and other age friendly and <strong>in</strong>dependenceenhanc<strong>in</strong>gpractices <strong>for</strong>m part <strong>of</strong> any future <strong>in</strong>itiatives aimed at enhanc<strong>in</strong>gquality <strong>of</strong> life <strong>in</strong> long-stay care facilities.Connectedness, Social Relationships and NetworksAs endorsed <strong>in</strong> <strong>Care</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Older</strong> <strong>People</strong> (NESF, 2005), the research found that quality<strong>of</strong> life <strong>in</strong> long-stay care is enhanced if:16residents are encouraged and facilitated to reta<strong>in</strong> previous <strong>in</strong>terestsresidents are enabled to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> contact l<strong>in</strong>ks to the community,their social networks and familyresidents have mean<strong>in</strong>gful relationships with those around themcont<strong>in</strong>uity <strong>of</strong> staff is developed and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed.In this regard, the Council recommends that:mean<strong>in</strong>gful and respectful engagement with residents is encouragedresidents are treated with k<strong>in</strong>dness, respect and considerationgood relationships between residents and family and community areencouraged wherever residents wish itresident/resident relationships are encouraged and facilitated, but respect<strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual preferences always guides this facilitationfamily and community contributions, where appropriate, are recognisedas an important part <strong>of</strong> the residents’ carethe facility is located with<strong>in</strong> the community <strong>in</strong> which the resident <strong>for</strong>merlyresided and cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g contacts are encouraged and fostered.<strong>Improv<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Quality</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Older</strong> <strong>People</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Long</strong>-<strong>Stay</strong> <strong>Care</strong> Sett<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> Ireland
