742 ADDRESS TO NEW MEMBERSof the spouses who gave much needed support throughout thisjourney. You were integral parts of your partners’ successes.Let’s spend a few minutes on the subject of looking forward.Where do you go next? What is your horizon–both inward outward? You are a member of a wonderful, dynamic society that hashelped prepare you for where you are today. I am sure you knowthat by now. Part of your inward horizon will always be theCAS–it deserves your support and participation. You will continueto learn from your involvement. As the years unfold, youwill realize you have a debt to repay. Our Society needs yourhelp and it is up to you and others to continue its success. On the inward side, I would be remiss if I did not add that youshould be aware of involvement in our sister organizations. Forexample, the American Academy of Actuaries and the CanadianInstitute of Actuaries accomplish many good things on our behalf.I am talking about practice councils, principles developedby the Actuarial Standards Board, and congressional hearings,to mention a few. Now add Sarbanes-Oxley and other externalpublic involvement and you can see that the AAA and CIA areimportant keys to your future actuarial life.Another semi-internal horizon that might be of interest to youat one point in your career is ASTIN and the International ActuarialAssociation (IAA). You will find actuaries from outsideNorth America to be quite interesting and they sometimes dohave a different perspective on actuarial matters. Your officersand board of directors are pursuing the globalization of the casualtyactuarial profession in many ways and this is certainly agrowth area for our profession.Perhaps it would take too many words to tell you our Societyand sister organizations do need everyone’s help. Without it theywill not survive. It is up to you.
