OBITUARIES 827J. GARY LaROSE1947—<strong>2005</strong>Gary LaRose passed away on April 11, <strong>2005</strong>. Born on April<strong>15</strong>, 1947, he attended Andrews University in Berrien Springs,Michigan, graduating in 1969 with a B.A. in mathematics. Hewent on to study at Notre Dame and earned a masters in mathematicsin 1974. He became an Associate in 1979 and a Fellowin 1981. Early in his career he worked in medical malpracticeinsurance with the Medical Protective Company. Subsequent careermoves were to Employers Re and Ernst & Young.In his involvement with CAS, he volunteered on several committeesincluding the Education and Examination Committee–Examination (1981—1983), the Examination Committee, (1984—1985), The Syllabus Committee (1984—1989), and the EducationPolicy Committee (1989, 1990, and 1993). He also served as arepresentative for the <strong>Actuarial</strong> Education and Research Foundationfrom 1983 to 1990. LaRose also volunteered as an instructorin a graduate-level actuarial science program sponsoredby the <strong>Society</strong> of Actuaries at universities in Moscow and Warsaw.Upon returning to the United States, he worked as a solepractitioner consulting actuary and as director of curriculum forthe American Institute of CPCUs, and finally for the NevadaInsurance Department. In 1982 he published “A Note on LossDistributions” in the Proceedings.Jim Hall (FCAS, 1973) remembers LaRose using aspects ofthe Bailey-Simon paper to develop a system of credibility valuesfor loss-free workers compensation risks. This system was usedsuccessfully for a number of years by a specialty underwriter.Hall was so amazed by the results that he asked author LeRoySimon to peer review the work and Simon found no correctionswere required.
