PHILLIPS1923—<strong>2005</strong>Born April 10, 1923, to Herbert and Agnes Phillips, HerbertPhillips joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1941 and served withThird Marine Division in the South Pacific. When he returnedhome, he attended Boston College and graduated in 1949 with aB.S. in mathematics. He taught mathematics in the Boston highschool system until he decided to pursue a career as a propertyand casualty actuary.He became a CAS Associate in 1956 and a CAS Fellow in1959. He later became vice president and senior actuary for CommercialUnion in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1976, he moved toToronto to work for the Insurers Advisory Organization. Heretired in 1982. While a member of CAS, he served as theCAS Treasurer in 1982 and as the vice president-administrationfrom 1983—1984. He also volunteered in the Committee on Sites(1980—1982), the Finance Committee (1982—1985), and the ProgramPlanning Committee (1987—1989).He passed away on October 6, <strong>2005</strong>. He is survived byhis wife, Anne Carr Phillips; daughter, Caren Houston (Kerri);grandchildren, Caitlin and Connor; and sister, Doris Phillips. Heis predeceased by his parents and by his sisters Anne Grant andAgnes Phillips.
