Appraisal criteria for file retention included the presence <strong>of</strong>attorney's handwritten notes, substantiating correspondence,depositions, and transcripts, which are seldom or never presentin the Supreme Court's files.-------------------------The State Archives will retain all pre-1920 patient case files intheir entirety. The State Archives will retain a representativesample <strong>of</strong> post-1920 patient case files from the followingfacilities: Binghamton, Pilgrim, .... The sample capturesspecific patient populations and treatments as defined in thedetailed appraisal report, as well as providing geographiccoverage. The sample is necessary because over 110,000 cubic feet<strong>of</strong> patient case files currently exist, and cannot be micr<strong>of</strong>ilmedor retained in paper form. Admission and discharge ledgers forall patients will be retained by the State Archives to ensurethat core information survives on all patients for allfacilities.------------------------After they were micr<strong>of</strong>ilmed, the original letterpress copies weredestroyed due to their illegibility.5.3.5.
