GERMAR RUDOLF · THE RUDOLF REPORTremains of the foundation walls of farmhouse 2. 300 According to analysesof Allied air photographs, there was only temporarily a building inthe vicinity of the location ascribed to farmhouse 2; there is no trace offarmhouse 1. 252,301 The extermination of the Hungarian Jews is supposedto have been underway when the air photos were taken, withmany thousands of victims per day and strongly smoking cremations inlarge open ditches precisely in the area analyzed. 302 There is no trace oflarge cremation ditches, large fires giving off copious smoke, or largestockpiles of fuel. Only on air photos made during the winter of1944/1945, a few mass graves can be seen west of crematorium III—probably for the victims of the chaotic circumstances in the camp afterthe Germans started to shut down and dismantle the equipment in fallof 1944 during their withdrawal. 303Recently discovered documents prove that one of these farmhousesactually existed—and was used for disinfestation. The SS, inparticular, was prohibited from carrying on the disinfestation of personaleffects with Zyklon B inside the camp whenever there was asafety risk. The conversion of a farmhouse, which was located outsidethe camp, and whose utilization as provisional HCN disinfestation installationswould not have involved any safety risk for the camp itself, could have resulted from this difficult situation. Several documents arenow available which refer to an “existing building” outside of constructionsection B III, in which a bath installation and sauna were tobe installed. 304In late 2001, several European newspapers reported that an Italianscholar had discovered the ‘bunker 1’ in Birkenau. 305 As C. Mattognohas shown, however, this is nothing but a hoax. The farmhouse allegedlyidentified as the old bunker is at a totally different location thanthe alleged bunker 1 supposedly was, and it was never anything elsebut a farmhouse. 306300 J.-C.
