GERMAR RUDOLF · THE RUDOLF REPORTyears, circulating air systems did not yet exists, so that only the naturalair convection was responsible for distributing the gas. Remarkable isthe strong concentration reduction due to adsorption on the load, herelifeless material to be deloused. Due to the slow increase towards themaximum concentration, it must be assumed that Puntigam’s valueswithout circulating air system (Graph 12, lower curve) were achievedat similar temperatures. In case of hypothetical homicidal gassings, the sweat produced bythe frightened, crowded people and their HCN absorption through skinand lungs will cause similar losses, and in case of the undergroundmorgues of crematorium II and III, additional losses will occur due tothe cold and moist walls. In order to kill all victims quickly, as attested to by the ‘eyewitnesses’,such losses would have to be compensated by introducingeven more HCN than calculated before (chapter 7.3.1.3.1. and7.3.1.3.3.) in order to quickly reach and maintain high HCN concentrationseverywhere in the ‘gas chamber.’7.3.2. Critique of the Eyewitness Descriptions7.3.2.1. Theatre of the AbsurdFirst, a few critical remarks on three topics of eyewitness statementsrelating to homicidal mass gassings should be made at this point.7.3.2.1.1. Necessity of Co-OperationJust imagine the following scene: 1,000 people of both sexes pluschildren enter the undressing room with a surface area of 390 m 2(4,200 ft²). Each one would therefore have a area of only 60 cm × 60cm (2×2 ft) in which to undress. Experience shows that people do notpack themselves tightly to the very edge of an enclosed area, unless, ofcourse, they are quite willing to do so. 474 In order to get people to dothis, the procedure must be rehearsed; they must be aware of what ishappening and what steps they must follow—and they must be willingto co-operate.Alternatively, few people could be made to undress at a time, butthis assumes that the people who have already undressed are in the ‘gas474 Just think of street cars or buses, where everyone remains near the door, even though there isplenty of room at the rear.218
