GERMAR RUDOLF · THE RUDOLF REPORT5354555657for largely ignoring the witness testimony on the procedures supposedlyused during the gassings at Auschwitz and for the author’s lack ofunderstanding of the process by which hydrogen cyanide reacts withmasonry. Despite criticism directed at his study, 53 Bailer repeated hisunsustainable objections in a later publication, without responding tohis critics. 54At approximately the same time as Bailer’s first publication, G.Wellers also published a study of the Leuchter Report. Wellers’ positionwas superficial, and is characterized by lack of technical and scientificknowledge. 55Finally, the Auschwitz State Museum itself ordered an expert reportto be compiled. The Institute for Forensic Research, ToxicologyDivision, of Cracow, Poland, named after Prof. Dr. Jan Sehn, preparedthis report under Prof. Dr. J. Markiewicz on September 24, 1990,which confined itself to the analysis of masonry samples. 56 The reportconcluded that the reason why Leuchter’s samples from the homicidalgas chambers were mostly negative with respect to traces of cyanidewas because the cyanide compounds had been exposed for more than40 years to weathering, which these compounds allegedly could nothave withstood. Three of these authors from the Jan Sehn Institute laterpublished additional findings, 57 which were, however, based on a verifiablyincorrect analytical method—as was the first series of analyfürUnterricht und Kultur (eds.), Vienna 1991, pp. 47-52.
