I will only abandon my position when my doubts areconfirmed or rejected through convincing scientific arguments in a fairscientific discourse. Use of force will never change this position. Onthe contrary: it fortifies my conviction that I am right, because only hewho lacks arguments must use force. And since I have been chased allover the world ever since by all sorts of government with brute force, Inow know that I must be right.The Eros of CognitionIn time, a further motivation was added to those mentioned above,namely what I call the ‘Eros of Cognition.’ Whoever calls himself ascientist and has not experienced this, is not, in my opinion, a real scientist.The excitement of taking part in decisive scientific research anddiscoveries, to push things forward which one knows are new and evenrevolutionary, the consciousness of standing at the forefront and helpingdirect ‘whither the ship of discovery goest’– those are things thatone must know first-hand, in order to understand what is ‘Eros of cognition’.315
