The main point of the expert reportRemer had published was: there were no mass killingsin Auschwitz with Zyklon B. The court called thispublication ‘incitement to racial hatred,’ and Siebenbürgerimposed on General Remer a sentence of 22months imprisonment without probation. State AttorneyBaumann demanded a 30 months prison termand moved for the immediate arrest of the 80-yearold defendant in the courtroom. Observers of the trialbegan to suspect that the sentence had been decidedbefore the trial began. At 9:00 hours on October20, 1992, the day the trial opened, radioBAYERN 1 had announced: “This time it will costRemer. […] this time the punishment will be harder.”How did the announcer from B1 know that GeneralRemer would be punished more severely than inprevious trials?
