from116 Guide <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Isle</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Man</strong>.columns would not seem <strong>to</strong> be particularly out <strong>of</strong> place.Besides, <strong>the</strong> faculty <strong>of</strong> belief has received a streng<strong>the</strong>ning<strong>to</strong>nic, <strong>and</strong>, having accepted <strong>the</strong> legend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> demon dog in <strong>the</strong>guardroom, we are prepared <strong>to</strong> acquiesce with comparativereadiness in <strong>the</strong> equally au<strong>the</strong>ntic, if not so ghostly, s<strong>to</strong>rieswe are likely <strong>to</strong> hear before we quit <strong>the</strong> domain <strong>of</strong> romantichis<strong>to</strong>ry.There is, <strong>of</strong> course, a considerable amount <strong>of</strong> genuinehis<strong>to</strong>ric lore in connection with Peel Castle, <strong>the</strong> ca<strong>the</strong>dral,<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r churches, <strong>the</strong> monuments, <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>wers <strong>and</strong> dungeonswhich crown this memorable sea-beaten rock ; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>visi<strong>to</strong>r will find at <strong>the</strong> outset much matter <strong>of</strong> interest in <strong>the</strong>remains <strong>of</strong>St. German's Ca<strong>the</strong>dral.This is not <strong>the</strong> earliest church built on <strong>the</strong> site ; but <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> original edifice not a trace is now <strong>to</strong> be discerned. Thereare, however, records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> burial <strong>of</strong> two bishops, besidesGermanus, already mentioned, in <strong>the</strong> older church. BishopWymundus was interred here in 1151, <strong>and</strong> Bishop John in1164. The former, if tradition may be accepted, was a remarkableperson. He had a fine presence, wasvery eloquent, <strong>and</strong> was so admired by <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>ers, that <strong>the</strong>ychose him for <strong>the</strong>ir bishop, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Archbishop <strong>of</strong> York coneecratedhim;which circumstance, it is supposed, itcame <strong>to</strong> pass that <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> diocese has been ever sinceconsidered <strong>to</strong> be a portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn archicpiscopal province. His elevation did not satisfy <strong>the</strong> ambitious Wymund, who, we read, extended his personal influence by marrying<strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Thane <strong>of</strong> Argyle—an act which, if true, proves that <strong>the</strong> celibacy <strong>of</strong> bishops was not enforced by <strong>the</strong>early church <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>. He claimed also <strong>to</strong> be <strong>the</strong> son<strong>of</strong> Angus, Earl <strong>of</strong> Murray, <strong>and</strong> heir <strong>to</strong> his estates, Avhich hadpassed in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. He was popular with<strong>the</strong> ]\Ianxmen, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Man</strong>xmen had a liking for adventurousexpeditions. There might have been some who knew thathis fa<strong>the</strong>r was really one Jole, a <strong>Man</strong>xman, but if <strong>the</strong>y did<strong>the</strong>y judiciously held <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>to</strong>ngues ;<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishop, at <strong>the</strong>head <strong>of</strong> a goodly array <strong>of</strong> followers, l<strong>and</strong>ed on <strong>the</strong> coast <strong>of</strong>Scotl<strong>and</strong>, killed many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people, ravaged <strong>the</strong> country,<strong>and</strong> carried on a plundering warfare with such vigour <strong>and</strong>audacity that King David himself was compelled <strong>to</strong> enterin<strong>to</strong> negotiii lions with him, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scotch folks generally
