33 Guide <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Isle</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Man</strong>.On <strong>the</strong> summit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hill behind Castle Mona, <strong>and</strong> almostappeavmg <strong>to</strong> be supported by <strong>the</strong> magnificent fir trees in <strong>the</strong>castle ground, is ano<strong>the</strong>r castellated structure,FalconClifT,which, originally erected as <strong>the</strong> residence <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>Man</strong>chester'smerchant princes, has lately been altered in<strong>to</strong> anhotul. Attached <strong>to</strong> it are extensive pleasure grounds, a <strong>the</strong>atre,concert hall, <strong>and</strong> oilier attractions ; <strong>and</strong> though, as its nameimplies, it is perched on <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cliff, in a spot somewhatinaccessible trom <strong>the</strong> shore, this difficulty has been got overby <strong>the</strong> addition <strong>of</strong> an inclined tramway, or lift. Its frontdoor faces, <strong>and</strong> is on a level with, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> main thoroughfares<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> upper part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>wn.A little far<strong>the</strong>r on is ano<strong>the</strong>r large hotel, <strong>the</strong> Queen s, <strong>and</strong>shortly beyond, <strong>the</strong> road, lined with pretty residences <strong>and</strong>gardc'.is, divides, <strong>the</strong> way <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> left rising ra<strong>the</strong>r steeply <strong>to</strong>Burnt Mill. Following <strong>the</strong> shore road, we reachDerby Castle,owned Ity <strong>the</strong> Dcrliy Castle Hotel <strong>and</strong> Pleasure GroundsCompauj'. This, like Falcon Cliff, is a very popular pleasureresort. Good instrumental b<strong>and</strong>s are engaged, <strong>and</strong> so greatis <strong>the</strong> space allotted <strong>to</strong> dancing, that we are <strong>to</strong>ld as many asthree thous<strong>and</strong> persons can enjoy <strong>the</strong> ami;sement at once.Fetes on a large scale occur <strong>of</strong>ten in both <strong>the</strong>se places ; <strong>and</strong>it is strange if a season passes without its being discoveredthat <strong>the</strong>re is an anniversary <strong>of</strong> some event in which KingOrry <strong>the</strong> Dane was concerned, which deserves commemoration.In <strong>the</strong> day-time, <strong>and</strong> when no particular fete is arrangedfor, <strong>the</strong> extensive grounds attached <strong>to</strong> both <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m atforddelightful promenades.On <strong>the</strong> hill above Derby Castle is Stratliallan ParTi, <strong>and</strong>near it is <strong>the</strong> Vic<strong>to</strong>ria Tower, in which are a camera obscura,telescopes, electrical <strong>and</strong> galvanic machines, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r attractions.From <strong>the</strong> summit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>wer, it goes without saying,a glorious prospect can be obtained. The tram-cars (fare,twopence) run from <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Loch Promenadenearly <strong>to</strong> Derby Castle.Eeturning <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> Vic<strong>to</strong>ria Pier, before making anearer acquaintance with <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>wn itself, we may look across<strong>the</strong> moi;th <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> harbour, at <strong>the</strong> fine residences clustered ontlio side <strong>and</strong> around <strong>the</strong> base <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hill, surmounted by <strong>the</strong>DoiKjlas Head Hntcl.
