;Ballaugh. 167The shore is about a niilo distant from <strong>the</strong> village hotel.Much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> is <strong>of</strong> a kindty nature, though somewhat i\xybut it is gradually being greatly improved in fertility by aplentiful admixture <strong>of</strong> splendid marl, readily available uponmany <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> farms. At <strong>the</strong> north-eastern boundary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>parish <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> is <strong>of</strong> a boggy character, lying <strong>to</strong>o low <strong>to</strong> admi<strong>to</strong>f au easy or effectual drainage <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> sea ; agriculture isconseqiiently making but slow progress in that part.There are many pleasant walks iu <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood.One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se is very romantic, <strong>and</strong> leads through an over-^W^l^^^lll^OLD FONT IN EALLAUCill CHUUUishadowed <strong>and</strong> secluded dell <strong>to</strong> Itavensdalc, a very commodiousresidence. The walk hence over <strong>the</strong> mountains <strong>to</strong>Tholt-e-Will, is a most delightful one, affording excellentl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> sea views.The road <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> right, near <strong>the</strong> bridge, leads through BallaughGlen <strong>to</strong> Dritldale. This walk abounds in <strong>the</strong> mostmagnificent mountain scenery, <strong>and</strong> before nearing Druidale<strong>the</strong> view is wild <strong>and</strong> romantic. The lower part is borderedon each side by cottages, in which contentment apx^ears <strong>to</strong>reign supreme ; but after passing Eavensdale, <strong>the</strong> glen becomeswild <strong>and</strong> solitary. The rugged path <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> left leadsover <strong>the</strong> range separating this glen from that <strong>of</strong> Sulby, which
