180 Guide <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Isle</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Man</strong>.•will prefer visiting <strong>the</strong>m on wheels, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore we combine<strong>the</strong>m in one trip.Glen Mona,or, as it was called before it was opened out, " The Rhenabor Barony Glen," is <strong>the</strong> nearest <strong>to</strong> liamsey. It is approachedby <strong>the</strong> road branching <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> left, immediately after passing<strong>the</strong> Dlioon Church. The drive <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> entrance <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> glen isby a picturesque country road, skirting <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hill, whence excellent views <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn range <strong>of</strong> hills areobtained. The glen itself is well wooded <strong>and</strong> abounds inquiet nooks <strong>and</strong> corners, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are w^aterfalls that cancompare with those in Sulby Glen, <strong>the</strong> Dhoon, &c. In springboth sides are clo<strong>the</strong>d in verdui'e, which, when <strong>the</strong> autumntints begin <strong>to</strong> appear, presents a charming variety <strong>of</strong> colour. The shore is very steep at <strong>the</strong> bot<strong>to</strong>m <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> glen, but it is freefrom rocks, <strong>and</strong> was <strong>the</strong>refore selected as <strong>the</strong> spot where <strong>the</strong>new submarine cable <strong>to</strong> St. Bee's, in Cumberl<strong>and</strong>, was laidin 1885.Eegaining <strong>the</strong> high-road, we next reachDhoon Glen, about six <strong>and</strong> a half miles from Eamsey, <strong>and</strong> tv/o <strong>and</strong> a halffrom Laxey, on <strong>the</strong> left-h<strong>and</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> high-road. Itis easily found, but <strong>to</strong> prevent any mistakes <strong>the</strong> proprie<strong>to</strong>rhas placed a notice board at <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bye-road leading<strong>to</strong> it, indicating that that road leads " To <strong>the</strong> Dhoon Glen."After taking this bye-road, care must be taken not <strong>to</strong> turn <strong>to</strong><strong>the</strong> left down a path aj^parentlj' leading <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> shore, but <strong>to</strong>keep on <strong>the</strong> road, past <strong>the</strong> quarry. The entrance <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> glenis by <strong>the</strong> side<strong>of</strong> Hazel Cottage, wherein <strong>the</strong> proprie<strong>to</strong>r resides. Here refreshments maj' be procured, horses stabled, &c. Atm'n <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> right leads at once <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> glen, <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong> little stream, <strong>the</strong> NuUigs, rushes over <strong>the</strong> rocks at thisspot <strong>and</strong> forms <strong>the</strong> first fall. There is a large j)lantationhere which is excellently adapted for large picnic parties. From this place <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> lead mines, a short distance down <strong>the</strong>glen, several rustic bridges cross <strong>the</strong> stream, <strong>and</strong> excellentviews <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dells are obtained. But it is below <strong>the</strong> minesthat <strong>the</strong> glen opens out in<strong>to</strong> a gr<strong>and</strong>er [Aid more picturesquebeauty. The footpath that has been cut along <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>moiiutaiu <strong>to</strong>rrent leads through a labyrinth <strong>of</strong> trees, <strong>and</strong>finally brings us <strong>to</strong> a larger bridge that crosses <strong>the</strong> streamabout half-way down <strong>the</strong> principal waterfall. Our illustrationrepresents this spot in <strong>the</strong> glen. The fall makes two leaps.
