182 Guide <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Isle</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Man</strong>.The first one is sixty feet <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> lower one seventy feetin height, making <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r a <strong>to</strong>tal <strong>of</strong> a hundred <strong>and</strong> thirtyfeet. After heavy rains <strong>the</strong> spectacle is a magnificent one,<strong>and</strong> even during <strong>the</strong> summer months, when water is scarcer,<strong>the</strong> fall is worthy <strong>of</strong> admiration. Below this fall <strong>the</strong>re areseveral lesser ones <strong>and</strong> occasional cascades, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> swardalong <strong>the</strong> bed <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river is s<strong>of</strong>t <strong>and</strong> luxurious, <strong>the</strong> youngtrees forming an agreeable shade for picnic <strong>and</strong> pleasureparties. The water rushes along <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> shore <strong>and</strong> finally, leaping between two high rocks, forms a pool amidst <strong>the</strong>shingle <strong>and</strong> loses itself in <strong>the</strong> sea. Several excellent varieties<strong>of</strong> ferns are found in tlie glen.Having seen all that is <strong>to</strong> be seen in Dhoon Glon, wc follow<strong>the</strong> path throughGlen Callan <strong>and</strong> Fairy Dell, which are simply a continuation <strong>of</strong> Dhoon Glen, <strong>and</strong>,like it, contain lovely waterfalls, cascades, walks, <strong>and</strong> shadygroves, <strong>and</strong> varied, picturesque, <strong>and</strong> charming scenery.AH three are alike interesting <strong>to</strong> parties on jileasuro bent,<strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> botanist, geologist, <strong>and</strong> lover <strong>of</strong> nature. Inthis way, we reach <strong>the</strong> shore, where we find an excellentrestaurant, where we can supply our wants from a temptingbill <strong>of</strong> fai'c. A skilful arrangement <strong>of</strong> mirrors around <strong>the</strong>diuing-i-oom has <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> reproducing <strong>the</strong> little nooks <strong>and</strong>corners <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rocky coast with admirable effect; so that wecan face <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>scape up <strong>the</strong> glen, <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> same time see<strong>the</strong> waves tumbhng over <strong>the</strong> pebbles on <strong>the</strong> shore behind. The char (J c for admission <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> three glens is only foarl^ence. The Bight <strong>of</strong> Dhoon,as <strong>the</strong> bay is called, is surrounded by high rocks, some <strong>of</strong>which are <strong>of</strong> a very peculiar shape. On <strong>the</strong> south side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>bay, <strong>the</strong>re are two, called by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Man</strong>x people <strong>the</strong> Gowneys(heifers), <strong>and</strong> several interesting <strong>and</strong> picturesque caves. There is also, on <strong>the</strong> north side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bay, ano<strong>the</strong>r curiousrock, which is visible at half tide. It is called Carrick-e-Voddy (" dog's islet "), <strong>and</strong> is situated about a hundred <strong>and</strong>fifty yards from <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong>. The shore hereabouts aboundswith objects <strong>of</strong> interest, <strong>and</strong> a trip in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> boats thatai"o always kept in readiness will prove very enjoyable.Regaining <strong>the</strong> high-road, we ei<strong>the</strong>r return <strong>to</strong> Eamsey ordrive on, through Laxey, <strong>to</strong> Douglas, as best suits ourarrangements.
