The trees areclustered on <strong>the</strong> river banks, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are extremely pleasantshady nooks, which picnic parties gi'eatly favour, where<strong>the</strong> hampers can be opened, <strong>and</strong> cold chicken, ham, "fizz,"<strong>and</strong> flirtation enjoyed. The cottagers, perhaps, are none <strong>the</strong>worse <strong>of</strong>f for <strong>the</strong>se visits <strong>of</strong> pleasiu-e-seekers, <strong>and</strong> probablyare able <strong>to</strong> help <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> enjoy <strong>the</strong>mselves. Certainly <strong>the</strong>yare very polite <strong>and</strong> attentive, <strong>and</strong> readily point out <strong>the</strong> mostavailable paths where meditative walks may bo enjoyed, <strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong> dells <strong>and</strong> by-paths by way <strong>of</strong> which those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> partywho are more muscular than sentimental may struggle up<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> summit <strong>of</strong> Snaefell.Within five minutes' walk from <strong>the</strong> bridge is situated <strong>the</strong>now celebratedTholt-e-Will <strong>and</strong> Olt Waterfalls<strong>and</strong> pleasure-grounds, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most popular resorts on <strong>the</strong>isl<strong>and</strong>. They are situated at <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> Snaefell, <strong>and</strong> containwithin <strong>the</strong>ir own grounds <strong>of</strong> nearly two hundred acres <strong>the</strong>most thickly-wooded <strong>and</strong> picturesque portions <strong>of</strong> this farfamedglen. Visi<strong>to</strong>rs from Douglas will find <strong>the</strong> drive thisway <strong>to</strong> Kamsey delightful. It utilizes <strong>the</strong> mountain road{see pp. 62-4)—stUl called " new," in comparison <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs— along <strong>the</strong> base <strong>of</strong> Snaefell, <strong>and</strong> comm<strong>and</strong>s, as it nears <strong>the</strong>glen, <strong>the</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>est mountain scenery <strong>to</strong> be seen anywhere in<strong>the</strong> <strong>Isle</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Man</strong>.The <strong>to</strong>urist, lea\ang his conveyance at <strong>the</strong> south entrancegate <strong>and</strong> descending in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> glen, will find <strong>the</strong> finest view<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> falls <strong>and</strong> interesting parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> glens rendered easilyaccessible by well-made footpaths, rustic bridges, &c., <strong>the</strong>scenerj' throughout being very fine. From here, also, Snaefellmay be very easily ascended. Near <strong>the</strong> lower entrancegate, which opens in<strong>to</strong> Sulby Glen, <strong>and</strong> where wUl be fouud<strong>the</strong> conveyances, st<strong>and</strong>s a large restaurant, with a diningroom,in which an enticing bill <strong>of</strong> fai-e is provided dming <strong>the</strong>season. About a mile <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sulby river, celebrated, as wehave seen, for its good trout fishing, runs through <strong>the</strong> gi-ouuds.It is strictly preserved for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> visi<strong>to</strong>rs. Croq^uet,quoits, swings, &c., combine <strong>to</strong> make a visit pleasant.The Ascent <strong>of</strong> Snaefellcan be made with ease fi-om this point. Ano<strong>the</strong>r route is thatby <strong>the</strong> road recently made lower down <strong>the</strong> glon, v/hich leadsacross <strong>the</strong> bridge opposite <strong>the</strong> little Wesleyan Chapel akeadyreferred <strong>to</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n tui-ns <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> right.
