On aclear day <strong>the</strong> mountains in <strong>the</strong> south <strong>of</strong> Scotl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong>Lake district <strong>of</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong> may be made out. Looking in <strong>the</strong>opposite direction, <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>urist sees <strong>the</strong> great mass <strong>of</strong> NorthBarrule, not uncommonly with its " nightcap on," for mistsare frequent in this moist climate ; <strong>and</strong>, far<strong>the</strong>r south, <strong>the</strong>outline <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> yet l<strong>of</strong>tier Snaefell may be traced.A Uttle fur<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> road passes <strong>the</strong> Hihcrnian Inn, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>nit rims through <strong>the</strong> estate <strong>of</strong> Cardie Voar <strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong> littleChurch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dhoon, nestling in a pretty graveyard on <strong>the</strong>left; <strong>and</strong>, passing <strong>the</strong> Granite Qiiarnj <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> entrance <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>Dhoon Glen, bifurcates, both branches leading <strong>to</strong> Laxey, <strong>the</strong>chief features beyond which have been already fully described.Tliis sketch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> road will, in conjunction with oiu* map,enable our readers <strong>to</strong> follow more readily our directions forfinding <strong>the</strong> walks <strong>and</strong> drives branching out <strong>of</strong> it, which wewill now describe. And first <strong>of</strong> all we wiU pay a visitTO BALLURE GLEN, THE ALBERT TOWER,AND THE ELFIN GLEN.Ballure Glenconsidered by some as <strong>the</strong> finest in <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> thoughIswe should be sorry <strong>to</strong> have <strong>to</strong> decide between <strong>the</strong> claims <strong>of</strong>all its lovely vales <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> title, we have no hesitation in sayingthat this can hold its own in <strong>the</strong> contest. It is accessibleirom <strong>the</strong> Douglas road, about half a mile from <strong>the</strong> MarketPlace. If <strong>the</strong> visi<strong>to</strong>r turn down at Ballure Bridge, <strong>and</strong>follow <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stream <strong>to</strong>wards <strong>the</strong> hills, he will seeit <strong>to</strong> advantage. The overhanging trees, <strong>the</strong> romantic stream,<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> abundant wild flowers justify <strong>the</strong> popular description<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> glen as a "fairy spot." In June, 1885, <strong>the</strong> WaterworksCompany completed <strong>the</strong> erection in <strong>the</strong> glen <strong>of</strong> anfxtensive reservoir, capable <strong>of</strong> supplying <strong>the</strong> requirements<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inhabitants <strong>and</strong> visi<strong>to</strong>rs for a generation <strong>to</strong> come.When <strong>the</strong> shrubs <strong>and</strong> trees that have been planted increasein size, <strong>the</strong> beauty <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> glen will once more assert itself over<strong>the</strong> devices <strong>of</strong> art <strong>and</strong> scientific operations. The path leads<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fall, beyond which <strong>the</strong> glen is more open.Passing by <strong>the</strong> old reservoir <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Waterworks Company isa footpath leading <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> most conspicuous object as weapproach Ramsey, <strong>and</strong> indeed for miles around
