Incalm wea<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> passage is delightful ; we might almostfancy ourselves afloat on <strong>the</strong> Atlantic, so gr<strong>and</strong> is <strong>the</strong> effec<strong>to</strong>f <strong>the</strong> rise <strong>and</strong> fall <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> huge waves which meet us, <strong>and</strong>now <strong>and</strong> again break over <strong>the</strong> bows <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> steamer. Verysoon l<strong>and</strong> is lost <strong>to</strong> our view, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> waste <strong>of</strong> waters,with an unbroken horizon melting, as it were, in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> calm<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sky on all sides far away. Sitting under <strong>the</strong> awning,let us give a little attention <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry, <strong>the</strong> legends, <strong>the</strong>people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Isle</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Man</strong>. We shall find enough <strong>to</strong> talkabout <strong>to</strong> fill up <strong>the</strong> time before we see Douglas Head st<strong>and</strong>inggr<strong>and</strong>ly out above <strong>the</strong> busy piers, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>some houseson <strong>the</strong> Loch Parade, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> uoble semicircular sweep <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>b.iy with its background <strong>of</strong> wooded hills, <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> bay <strong>the</strong>little castellated Tower <strong>of</strong> Refuge, for fishermen in danger<strong>and</strong> for shipwrecked mariners, which we may accept as .-[^symbol <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kindliness <strong>and</strong> hospitality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Man</strong>xmen.One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first questions that suggests itself is, how came<strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong> be named ]\Ian ? Surely <strong>the</strong>re could havo beenno period in its his<strong>to</strong>ry when it was not an isle <strong>of</strong> womanalso. The isl<strong>and</strong>, we are <strong>to</strong>ld by all visi<strong>to</strong>rs, abounds inbeauty ; <strong>the</strong> harmoniousness <strong>of</strong> nature dem<strong>and</strong>s that lovelywoman should be among <strong>the</strong> native attractions. AVe mustrefer, it would seem, <strong>to</strong> etymologists <strong>and</strong> archseologists for<strong>the</strong> information we seek ;<strong>and</strong> we have ample variety fromwhich we can select according <strong>to</strong> our taste. <strong>Man</strong>xmen, in<strong>the</strong>ir own language, name <strong>the</strong> place <strong>Man</strong>nin (3Ieadhon-iri),or middle isl<strong>and</strong>, which, considering its position, enclosed asit were by Engl<strong>and</strong>, Scotl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong>, appears at first<strong>to</strong> be satisfac<strong>to</strong>ry; but Bishop Wilson (a celebrity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>isl<strong>and</strong>, respecting whom we shall have much <strong>to</strong> say far<strong>the</strong>r
