The Albert Toicer. 171The Albert Tower,built ou FrisscWs Hill, at ca considerable distance above <strong>the</strong>level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sea, <strong>to</strong> commemorate <strong>the</strong> visit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late PrinceConsort <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>. On <strong>the</strong> 20th <strong>of</strong> September, 1847, <strong>the</strong>roj-al j-acht, with <strong>the</strong> Qneen <strong>and</strong> Prince Albert on board, paida visit <strong>to</strong> Piamsey Bay. The Qneen did not disembark, but<strong>the</strong> Prince l<strong>and</strong>ed, somewhat hastily explored Ballure Glen<strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r choice spots, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n ascended <strong>the</strong> hill for <strong>the</strong>purpose <strong>of</strong> enjoying <strong>the</strong> magnificent view. The <strong>of</strong>ficials <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> had no notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> visit ; but <strong>the</strong> news spread,ALBERT aOWER.<strong>and</strong> forthw ith all who were any way within reach <strong>of</strong> Piamseyhiirried thi<strong>the</strong>r; but were <strong>to</strong>o late, <strong>the</strong> Prince having returned<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> yacht before <strong>the</strong>ir arrival. The loyal <strong>Man</strong>xfolkwere disappointed, but did <strong>the</strong> best <strong>the</strong>y could under <strong>the</strong> circumstances,resolving <strong>to</strong> erect a permanent record <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>visit. A public subscription was raised, <strong>and</strong> very shortly afterwards<strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eight Picv. <strong>and</strong> Hon. Henry Lord Auckl<strong>and</strong>,<strong>the</strong>n Bishop <strong>of</strong> Sodor <strong>and</strong> <strong>Man</strong>, laid <strong>the</strong> foimdation s<strong>to</strong>ne<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>wer. It is forty-five feet high, <strong>and</strong> is built <strong>of</strong> granite<strong>and</strong> slate. A winding staircase leads <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>, wliich is protectedby a battlement, a necessary precaution, for <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>wer
