36 Guide <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Isle</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Man</strong>.Eqturning <strong>to</strong> Prosjiect Hill, we pass <strong>the</strong> Vic<strong>to</strong>ria Hotel,<strong>and</strong> arrive at Fiucli Road, a liaudsome street, leading iu<strong>to</strong>AViudsor Road, wliich has a steep descent <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Esplanade,near <strong>the</strong> boat-house. At <strong>the</strong> right-h<strong>and</strong> corner <strong>of</strong> FinchRoad is St. Andrew's Presbyterian Chiircli, conspicuous forits h<strong>and</strong>some si)ire {services on Sunday at 11 <strong>and</strong> 6.30, <strong>and</strong>on Wednesday at 7 in <strong>the</strong> evening). On <strong>the</strong> opposite side <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> road is <strong>the</strong> Government Office, a h<strong>and</strong>some structure, withcolumns in front. It formerly belonged <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bank <strong>of</strong> Mona,a branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unfortunate City <strong>of</strong> Glasgow Bank.In <strong>the</strong> Finch Road is a h<strong>and</strong>some DrinJcinff Fountain, <strong>the</strong>gift <strong>of</strong> Mr. Melly, <strong>of</strong> Liverpool, <strong>and</strong> erected on <strong>the</strong> old Finchwell. At No. 4, John Martin, <strong>the</strong> painter, previously referred<strong>to</strong>, died ill February, 1854. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> road,near <strong>the</strong> sea, isSt.Thomas's Church.a striking edifice, in <strong>the</strong> Early English style, built in 1850,from <strong>the</strong> design <strong>of</strong> Mr. Ewan Christian, <strong>the</strong> funds being providedpartly by a grant from <strong>the</strong> Church Building Society,<strong>and</strong> partly by private subsciii^tion. The interior is veryh<strong>and</strong>some, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are a thous<strong>and</strong> sittings, one half free.This church possesses a peal <strong>of</strong> eight bells, <strong>the</strong> only peal intlie isl<strong>and</strong>, presented by <strong>the</strong> Rev. G. Catley (formerly <strong>the</strong>curate) <strong>and</strong> his wife.Beyond Finch Road, in Bucks Road, at <strong>the</strong> corner <strong>of</strong> HillStreet, <strong>and</strong> extending back <strong>to</strong> Myrtle Street, isSt. Mary's Roman Catholic Chapel,consecrated in 1859, by Dr. Goss, <strong>the</strong> Roman Catholic Bishop<strong>of</strong> Liverpool. The clergy house adjoins <strong>the</strong> church.A little fur<strong>the</strong>r along <strong>the</strong> road, is <strong>the</strong> Skating Bink,formed at <strong>the</strong> time when <strong>the</strong> " Plymp<strong>to</strong>n " mania was at itsheight, <strong>and</strong> still a popular place <strong>of</strong> entertainment.At tlie corner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Circular Road, a short distancebeyond Myrtle Street, is Finch Hill Congregational Church,a large building with a sjiire. There are many free sittings{services on Sundays at 11 <strong>and</strong> C.30), On <strong>the</strong> riglit-h<strong>and</strong>side <strong>of</strong> Bucks Road, Albert Street, Mona Road, <strong>and</strong> ChristianRoad run down <strong>the</strong> hillside <strong>to</strong> Finch Road, <strong>and</strong> from<strong>the</strong>se streets pleasant glimpses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sea can be gained. In<strong>the</strong>se streets, as well as in Prince's Street, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r streetson <strong>the</strong> opposite side <strong>of</strong> Bucks Road, comfortable <strong>and</strong> economicallodgings can be obtained.Higher up <strong>the</strong> Bucks Road, on <strong>the</strong> right-h<strong>and</strong> side, is
