The Town <strong>of</strong> Ramsey. 147The Bay.Having settled upon one's liead-qnarters, a stroll on tlioshore will advantageously occupy <strong>the</strong> interval between <strong>the</strong>visi<strong>to</strong>r's arrival <strong>and</strong> his dinner ; he will be rewarded, as wehave already stated, by a view <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most extensive<strong>and</strong> naturally beautiful bays on <strong>the</strong> coast. It forms a completesemicircle, with a diameter, from <strong>the</strong> Point <strong>of</strong> Ayre in<strong>the</strong> north <strong>to</strong> Maughold Head in <strong>the</strong> south, <strong>of</strong> about ninemiles. The l<strong>and</strong> at Maughold Head st<strong>and</strong>s out bold, rocky,<strong>and</strong> precipi<strong>to</strong>us, whilst <strong>to</strong>wards <strong>the</strong> Point <strong>of</strong> Ayre it is undu-THE PROMENADE.lating <strong>and</strong> slightly hilly. The soil <strong>to</strong>wards this point is <strong>of</strong> areddish hue ; at sunrise it has a very peculiar appearance.An excellent Promenade was constructed in 1875 at acost <strong>of</strong> about £'5,000; it extends from <strong>the</strong> shore end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>New or South Pier <strong>to</strong> Maughold Street, near <strong>the</strong> junction<strong>of</strong> Waterloo Road, affording a splendid walk, more thanthree-quarters <strong>of</strong> a mile in length. The sea wall <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Promenade is fifteen feet high from <strong>the</strong> foundation <strong>and</strong> fivefeet thick ; it is composed <strong>of</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ne <strong>and</strong> cement. A concretedfootpath, twelve feet wide, has been constructed along tin.
