He was not apparently very cove<strong>to</strong>us,for ho <strong>of</strong>fered his followers <strong>to</strong> divide <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> among <strong>the</strong>mif <strong>the</strong>y chose, or, if <strong>the</strong>y were not disposed <strong>to</strong> settle down asrespectable l<strong>and</strong>owners, <strong>to</strong> allow <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> privilege <strong>of</strong> plunderingaccording <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own sweet wills, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n returning<strong>to</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong>. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m chose <strong>the</strong> latter alternative, pilaging being more in <strong>the</strong>ir line than ploughing <strong>and</strong> reapingso <strong>the</strong>y loaded <strong>the</strong>mselves with all <strong>the</strong> spoil <strong>the</strong>y could collect,<strong>and</strong> returned home merrily. Some, however, preferred <strong>to</strong>remain with Godred, who established himself in <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rnpart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>, leaving <strong>the</strong> I<strong>Man</strong>xmen <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> enjoyment <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn half—at any rate for a time—making <strong>the</strong> conditionthat none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> native chiefs should endeavour <strong>to</strong>establish hereditary rights, <strong>the</strong> property <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> revenues <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> whole isl<strong>and</strong> being vested in him <strong>and</strong> his successors ; <strong>and</strong>it was not until <strong>the</strong> passing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Act <strong>of</strong> Settlement in 1704(due in a great measure, as we have already said, <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>exertions <strong>of</strong> Bishop Wilson), that <strong>the</strong> residents in that par<strong>to</strong>f <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> could obtain a valid title <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir property. At <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hiU is Ililn<strong>to</strong>wn, a very attractive privateresidence. The parish church <strong>of</strong> Lczayre, Ilohj Trinity, has <strong>the</strong> westporch overgrown with ivy, but is modern, <strong>and</strong> not striking inits architectural features. The beautiful situation <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>groups <strong>of</strong> walnut <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r trees which surround it, make it avery attractive spot. The register dates from 1G3G, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>local gossips are almost certain <strong>to</strong> mention that it contain^an entry (dated IGG(J) respecting a <strong>Man</strong>x matron, who wascertainly a wonderful woman ; for, if we believe <strong>the</strong> record(<strong>and</strong> we ought <strong>to</strong> believe it, for it is certified by <strong>the</strong> signature<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rev. Edvr^ard Crow, minister), she was <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>a child " which was baptized on a Monday ; <strong>and</strong> she came <strong>to</strong>church <strong>to</strong> be churched on <strong>the</strong> Wednesday next after."Having returned home, she again became a mo<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>and</strong> cameagain <strong>to</strong> be churched on <strong>the</strong> Saturday <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same week—" churched twice in <strong>the</strong> same week," says <strong>the</strong> register.A visit <strong>to</strong> Lezayre inspired <strong>the</strong> Rev. James GilborneLyons, LL.D., whose vigorous verses are known on botlisides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Atlantic, <strong>to</strong> write a pa<strong>the</strong>tic little poem, 77aIkturn <strong>to</strong> Lczayre ; but wc cannot say whe<strong>the</strong>r it is actuallyan au<strong>to</strong>biographical reminiscence or an effort <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> imagination. The poet says —
