During the decade:<br />

Medium human development countries accounted for 67 per cent <strong>of</strong> the total<br />

number <strong>of</strong> reported deaths but for almost all deaths from earthquakes, 96 per<br />

cent <strong>of</strong> deaths due to windstorms, 86 per cent <strong>of</strong> those caused by industrial<br />

accidents and 79 per cent <strong>of</strong> deaths from floods.<br />

1 VHHD stands for very high human development, HHD stands for high human<br />

development, MHD for medium human development and LHD for low human<br />

development.<br />

number <strong>of</strong> reported deaths but almost all deaths were caused by droughts / food<br />

insecurity and 89 per cent <strong>of</strong> deaths following a volcanic eruption.<br />

High human development countries accounted for 2 per cent <strong>of</strong> the total number<br />

<strong>of</strong> reported deaths but for 22 per cent <strong>of</strong> deaths from miscellaneous accidents<br />

and for 14 per cent <strong>of</strong> those from transport accidents.<br />
