The behavior of multiple quantum coherence in the presence of
magnetic field gradients can be exploited as another mechanism to filter
out water signal in an imaging instrument. Using a combination of
r.f./receiver phase cycling and the selection of a particular echo, one
can achieve a high level of water suppression. Lactic acid and to a
lesser extent fat, are biological materials that respond to this
experiment. Results using selective pulses are displayed with a
discussion of sensitivity considerations, field dependence and possible
applications.
