SELECTIVE DATA SAMPLING: APPLICATION TO 2D NMR

Novel methods for selectively sampling NMR data, e.g. exponential
sampling 1'2 will be discussed. Such methods are of particular interest
in 2D NMR where, for reasons of sensitivity, data often have to be
truncated in the second dimension (tl). Selective sampling, in
conjunction with methods such as maximum entropy for reconstructing spectra
from incomplete time domain data, offers a way of obtaining better
resolution in the second dimension (Wl), for a given recording time. This
gives an improvement on maximum entropy reconstructions from
conventionally sampled (but truncated) data 5.
In exponential sampling, data points are measured with exponentially
decreasing frequency. When only selected time domain data points are
recorded, the data processing in effect both extrapolates beyond and
interpolates between the measured points. Exponential sampling is
applicable to exponentially decaying data which is cosine modulated in t I.
For different data, alternative sampling schemes would be possible.
